Switzerland-based artist Christian Tagliavini draws inspiration from 16th century Italian painter Bronzino in creating his latest photography series. Titled “1503”, Tagliavini recreates portraits from the renaissance era using modern technology. His photographs feature protagonists in person, using well-constructed costumes, lighting and makeup, and combine various elements that harkens to the sophistication, elegance and emotionless qualities of the renaissance paintings. Costume choice was critical in making his photographs believable, and each piece was chosen and conceived especially for the project. The distinct exaggerated neck, that was the fashion of that era, was included in this recreation through photo manipulation. The model’s detached state and deadpan face mimic the subjects in Bronzino’s paintings effectively. His photography series unites history and modernity, looking at both traditional and contemporary methods of making art.
