It is perhaps human condition to constantly outdo and outprice its creations – like Sony’s $5,000 increase for this year’s new fanciest installment, which was already an astounding $25,000 projector.
Luxury tech is often most delightful to simply admire; your hard-earned cash might be better spent elsewhere on a more beautifully-designed tech, a luxurious vacation experience, or a stunning watch that stands the test of time. Extraordinary price points might not confer proportionate benefits and satisfaction. Here, we take a look at 6 of the most expensive tech gadgets and what they can do so one can decide whether they are worth it.
6 of the most expensive tech gadgets
Tag Heuer Connected 45 Full Diamond Smartwatch – $197,000
Someone over at Tag Heuer looked at his $1,600 Tag Heuer smartwatch and thought, “gosh, this could really use $195,400 worth of diamonds on it.” Unveiled at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie Genève 2018 watch show, the Connected 45 Full Diamond is made of 18K white gold with a whopping 589 diamonds studded all around the body – 78 on the bezel, 16 on the lugs, and 495 on the bracelet.
The extravagant Full Diamond smartwatch is otherwise identical to the Tag Heuer Connected Modular 45 smartwatch with standard Android Wear 2.0 capabilities, such as an AMOLED screen, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, GPS, and Intel Ataom Z34XX processor.
Vertu Signature Cobra – $360,000
Launched in May 2017, the Vertu Signature Cobra was a limited edition feature phone with an exorbitant price tag of $360,000. The device featured a snake figure wrapped around the edges, consisting of 439 rubies and emerald Snake eyes. Built entirely in the UK, only 8 units were made, and customers would receive the device via helicopter when the entire payment was made.
The Signature Cobra was Vertu’s last luxury phone before it shut down in July 2017 after declaring bankruptcy.
AudioQuest Diamond 1m Braided HDMI cable – $1,094.75
This HDMI cable might be the cheapest gadget on this list, but must be the most extortionate. Rip-off cables have long been a big problem for people who are not tech savvy. Even spending $10 on a HDMI cable is already exploitative, let alone a thousand dollars.
Bang & Olufsen BeoLab 90 Speaker – $77,800
The quirky-looking BeoLab 90 by Bang & Olufsen costs almost $80,000, and is equipped with 18 “state-of-the-art” loudspeaker drivers. Available limitedly at selected stores for test drive “by appointment only”, the speaker is said to be the “culmination of our wildest dreams” by the Danish audio company.
Samsung Class 105S9 Curved 4K TV – $149,999.99
Samsung’s Class 105S9 Curved 4K TV is nothing short of a mega-TV, spanning an astonishing 105-inches. The screen is curved for a more immersive experience, along with a full 4K display resolution and four HDMI ports.
Each unit comes built to order, including Samsung’s “Elite Service” where customers will have an engineer to deliver the behemoth and optimise it for their living rooms.
Sony LSPX-A1 Projector – $30,000
This year, Sony announced the $30,000 4K Ultra Short Throw Projector at CES, grabbing all the headlines from the show. The device is meant to sit 9.6-inches from the wall, projecting a 4K image that stretches up to 120-inches. In addition, the device features a Glass Sound Speaker that generates 360-degree audio using two organic glass tweeters on the front legs, three midrange speakers, and a separate subwoofer, while the center speaker bounces sound off the wall the projector faces.
To round things off, the device also boasts a premium furniture-like design that blends harmoniously into most living spaces, with a rear cover specially designed to conceal connectors hidden within.
