As the cooler, slightly more hip, younger sibling to the Academy Awards, the Cannes Film Festival is currently captivating the film and fashion world. The red carpet has been rolled out and the teeming mob of tuxedo-clad paparazzi (even they have a dress code!) is out in full force to catch the stars in their gowns and glory.
But it’s not just a spectator sport of sartorial selections; the film festival has long been known for its illustrious line-up of films from around the world, providing a platform where the discovery of new talent and comebacks of more seasoned actors to former glory occur simultaneously. The 11-day-long event is currently underway – and we’ve been stalking our favourite celebs. Check out our highlights, the red carpet splashes and the significant snafus below.
Actress Cate Blanchett was named Jury President of the festival – only the fourth woman to occupy the chair since the turn of the millennium. In the wake of the #MeToo movement, it’s a new era for an industry that has been marred by shocking, albeit unsurprising, revelations of sexual misconduct by powerful men. At Cannes, 82 women linked arms in silent protest on the red carpet to let the global audience know that it isn’t just the film industry but women across the board who have had to face mistreatment and harassment.
For all the spectacular best-dressed looks and the gloriously disastrous ensembles that strutted down the Cannes red carpet, here are Prestige’s picks and highlights. But it’s not over yet – the festival wraps up on May 19 so there’s plenty more opportunity for movie stars of all stripes to amuse or bemuse us. Meanwhile, some of our faves are:
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
Kendall Jenner
Deepika Padukone
