A Creative Ride with Metro Doodle

Meet Samar Khan, 25, who doodles a new world of thoughts and ideas, different from reality in the Delhi Metro

Doodling is deep thinking in disguise and that it is a simple, accessible tool for problem-solving in general. For 25-year-old Samar Khan, a full-time software developer and freelance illustrator based in Delhi, doodling came as an extension of his passion for art. He took it into the public domain in October 2016, through his micro-blogging site (MetroDoodle/Instagram) that featured an alien monster peeping into the phone of a man sitting in the Delhi Metro.

Samar’s artworks are concentrated around Metro and alien creatures that are seamlessly amalgamated with the passengers. “I began travelling to Noida from Saket in November 2016 and would take random photos and imagine quirky scenarios. That’s how the first Metro doodle came to me and received good feedback,” says Khan, who uploads doodles depending upon his mood and not under any social media pressure of uploading one art daily.

Samar also gets requests from his Instagram followers and he believes that is the power of this medium where he gets to connect with his target audience. He recalls, “I was recently at the Pearl Academy of Fashion and the first-hand feedback about my work made me realise the legacy I am creating and I feel proud that my thought of transforming the dullest moments in the Metro into fun stories that make people happy or curious is making its ways through the increasing number of followers on Instagram.”

His first inspiration of starting MetroDoodle came from creative pages like LucasLeviton, Subwaydoodle and Donna_adi that generally use photographs and celebrities to define their doodle art.  But Samar found his inspiration in people who use the Metro. He adds, “There is so much to see in the Metro, so many conversations to listen to. I find inspiration in people who use the Metro and this becomes obvious as one scroll through the 171 posts on my page, that are created through Sketchbook tool on Android and then further procreated on iPad Pro.”

For Samar, his passion for art has made him stand here today with MetroDoodle that he is now planning to shape into a profession. He affirms, “It was only ion 2018, I started thinking about turning my passion into a profession. I don’t know how this transformation will happen, but yes, I am keen to do so, with a perspective to create more content and at the same time guide others through workshops and seminars on Doodle art.”

When asked about his favourite project to date, pat came the reply, “I have never looked at any of my work as a favourite, they all had been spontaneous thought of mind and I think that’s the beauty of my art.” “Having said that, my association with Adidas Originals for the Pharrel Williams store launch creative is something that is close to my heart. To date, even I am unable to figure out the reason for this closeness, but yes, it was a project that I will never forget and such associations are the real reward that a young artist like me craves for, to mark a presence in the creative digital world,” adds Samar who has also done commissioned work with brands like Apple, Disney India, Samsung, Diesel and HP.
