When we talk about a sensuous voice, one name that always clicks is Prakriti Kakar. Following the
footsteps of her elder sister Akriti, Prakriti has made a name in the playback singing along with her twin sister Sukriti. TMM caught up exclusively for a special interaction with the Katra Katra singer at Hardrock cafe, Mumbai just before her gig. Excerpts from the interview:
Prakriti, Sukriti and you are twins, did it happen anytime in childhood when people got confused?
That still happens(laughs), it’s the sign of being twins. We are often mistaken for each other. There was always something super hilarious that used to happen during school and college time and we use to take advantage of being twins. In college, I used to mark attendance on her behalf as there was one professor who didn’t know that we were twins in the class. We used to fool people all the time as we both looked the same, but now consciously and deliberately we try to look different, our personalities are different.
Prakriti Kakar, How would you describe Ankit Tiwari’s contribution to your musical career?
Ankit is a super special composer and a good human being. He is the one who believed in me before
anyone. I owe my debut hit song to him. It was a memorable experience to sing Katra Katra with Ankit for ‘Alone’ starring Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover in 2015. That was the first time I got to hear my own voice, there was a lot of discovery about my voice in that song. The reactions I get for the song to date is overwhelming.
Prakriti Kakar, Your latest single ‘Sudhar ja’ deals with betrayal, what would you suggest to people who have felt betrayed in life?
I think I am too young to advise anyone about anything, but the fan base we have majorly consisted of young girls. Sudhar ja is an ode to all those girls who are into relationships, some of them are not being so happy. The message in the song is for all those girls to be stronger and move on if needed. We made this song as we wanted it to be relatable to the youth and it struck the right chord with the audience.
Prakriti Kakar, You also play keyboard, as a singer how has it helped you and what are the instruments that you want to play?
Playing any instrument becomes important and is a valuable addition to you when you sing. I am playing keyboard since childhood, it helps improve the pitch of a singer and takes you to another level. I do my riyaz as well with it. So, knowing the keyboard has always helped me. It comes also beneficial when you have a song in your mind, but the musical arrangement isn’t ready to present it to someone, then singing with just a keyboard comes as a boon. The instrument I would love to learn is guitar.
You recorded a Kannada song some time back, how challenging was the experience?
That song is going to release in some time. I would love to do more songs in South Indian language. I am eagerly waiting for people to call me from that side of the industry. I started last year and the song came out pretty good and at the end of the day its music. Though I had a supervisor who helped in riyaz and told me the meaning of each word, but it helped me as I had to understand and emote while singing. It wasn’t that tough.
How do you deal with competition in the music world?
An ideal way to deal with it by thinking that there is ample space for everybody. I genuinely believe in it. I also strongly feel that if I don’t get something, it wasn’t meant for me. It has taken years for me to realise that, because in an industry like ours, you can get replaced, but you would only get to know when the song releases, there is no clarity initially. To choose music as a profession you need to be very strong mentally. I feel there are so many new singers coming with so many different voices and styles there is always so much to learn from each of them.
