From National School of Drama to Bhabhiji Ghar Par Hain, Rohitashv Gour’s journey in the acting industry is full of ups and down. Today, with the success of his family comedy show, he feels creatively satisfied and feels that his wife has played a key role in his success story.
Rohitashv Gour, Describe your journey to the National School of Drama?
When I was doing graduation, then only I decided to go into acting. My father Sudarshan Gour supported my decision. He advised me to go to the National School of Drama, Delhi so that I can get equipped with the tools of acting. Then I filled my form from Shimla and I got selected among 20 students in India. I did a 3-year professional course in acting followed by a fellowship for 1 year in acting in Delhi. For 6 years, I worked as an actor at a professional level. And finally became a part of the big entertainment industry.
Rohitashv Gour, Tell us something about your social work.
I am very much into serving society through social work programs. More than me, my wife Rekha Gour is connected to the social institutions. She works for cancer patients. I am a part of All India Artist Association Shimla through which we organize drama-dance festivals, in which we encourage young talents. We also provide scholarships to such students. We try to support many social causes. All in all, if I get a chance to support any person I always look forward to it. It gives me a sense of satisfaction and peace.
Rohitashv Gour, How is life post the success of Bhabhiji Ghar Par Hain?
When a serial becomes very famous then your character seems to be very popular in every household and it also becomes a household name. Same has happened with my character of “Manmohan Tiwari”. This serial is not like a saas-bahu drama so people in the Bollywood industry are also watching it and it has started getting recognition there too. For instance, the character of Vibhuti Mishra got so popular that Asif got a call from Salman Khan (sir) for appreciation. Once at a party, I came across David Dhawan and he also recognised me and it was an appreciation for me. Life has become good and my face has now become more popular and people recognize me.
How far the feedback is important for you and your character?
I love the reaction that I get from the audience. The children are fonder of the serial now. So getting so much love makes me amazed seeing the reach of television. When the fans come for selfies and autographs I feel that I have done my job right and my work has been recognised well.
How important is the role of your wife in your career?
My career and life both have become heaven since she has entered my life with her luck. She used to work in a cancer research institute but now she has taken voluntary retirement. My wife and I have similar thoughts. She always guides and supports me throughout my ups and downs of life. My two daughters are the ones who make the bond between me and my wife stronger. ‘Agar Woh Sui Hain Toh Main Dhaaga’. We are like two wheels of the vehicle without which it will not run.
How do you handle the hardships of life?
Life is full of ups and downs, there had been phases when there a dearth of work. In between 2002-2006, I had a tough time and had not much to work. During that time I was doing 1 or 2 episodes story for which I used to get Rs. 1000 or 2000. There was very less work on television for people like me. I used to think that this acting line is so uncertain, but then slowly I got a lot of work and then I was offered the role of Mukundi Lal Gupta -(a common man ) in Lapatangaj By Ashwini Dhir. It ran for 5 years and then I got the role of Manmohan Tiwari in Bhabhiji Ghap Par Hai. With time things changed and today I am creativity satisfied.
