So it begins, again. Alber Elbaz, the former creative head behind Lanvin is said to be in talks to take over the reins at Oscar de la Renta but this is all hearsay. The Moroccan-born Israeli designer will be the one of the latest designers to join a new fashion house. Elbaz himself called his departure from Lanvin a personal “tragedy” and, in the same Vogue article, said he would only take up another job in fashion if it would make him feel “awake” again.
His previous role at Lanvin saw him guide the Parisian house for 14 years before finally leaving in October 2015. The timing of his departure, said to have been brought on by rising tensions with the owner of Lanvin, sparked off another rumor that Elbaz was due to join Dior. While the move never happened and Maria Grazia Chiuri took over that position, it was a dream that many harbored for sure.
Oscar de la Renta, had been under the helm of Peter Copping until earlier this year when he stepped down citing “personal circumstances”. This resulted in the brand’s Spring/Summer 2017 collection to be taken care of by the in-house design team. The collection is set to preview this fall. It is not difficult to imagine Elbaz, whose revival of Lanvin was based on a modern yet ultra-feminine aesthetic, at Oscar de la Renta. If nothing else, that label is famous for its enchanting red carpet styles.
The fashion world has seen a rapid succession of high-profile resignations in recent months, beginning with Alexander Wang’s departure from Balenciaga last summer and including Hedi Slimane quitting Saint Laurent and Francisco Costa and Italo Zucchelli parting ways with Calvin Klein.
