As part of Christie’s Handbags & Accessories auction, Alexander McQueen’s iconic Armadillo Boot will be authentically reproduced in aid of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF to support earthquake relief efforts in Nepal.

The Armadillo boot is one of Alexander McQueen’s most recognizable designs, having first appeared in the spring/summer 2010 catwalk. With only 21 pairs ever produced, the shoes were never available to the public except a lucky few, including Daphne Guinness, Kelis and Lady Gaga, who featured the shoes heavily in her “Bad Romance” music video.

The unusually shaped footwear which became the pillar of McQueen’s career before his untimely death boasts a 30cm high heel and elongates the leg with its unique silhouette. Each shoe has been hand made in Italy, which according to The Daily Beast, is “an elaborate process that spanned five days and involved 30 people, using material from three suppliers and passing through three factories”.

This time, the fashion house has created three pairs in ivory, brown and green, all in python leather.

Five years on from the designer’s death, fans of McQueen’ work will be able to enjoy “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty”, an exhibition at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum until August 2nd.

All of the net amount from the auction of the boot will be donated by Alexander McQueen to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF in order to support earthquake relief in Nepal.
