He may still be under 30 and headquartered in Singapore – a place more readily associated with impeccable infrastructure than its beauty businesses – but Lion City native Nicholas Travis is already making waves in the skincare world. His quick-fix skincare brand Allies of Skin was founded only two years ago and has already garnered considerable shelf space in premium beauty emporiums such as Joyce Beauty, Space NK, Barneys and Mr Porter, as well as coverage by the likes of CR Fashion Book, WWD and Vogue.co.uk.
Allies of Skin is the antithesis of the 11-step regime popularised in Korea that’s been the prevailing wisdom of the last few years. It’s basically four products – sold separately or in various combinations – that juice up skin without hassle or time commitment. There’s a leave-on day mask and night mask, a super-special mist and an overnight peel.
“We are about effortless skincare,” explains Travis. “We have things to do, places to be. You don’t have time to wait for a mask to dry or rinse off or peel off. I wanted to take the concept of super-concentrated formulas, which is what’s in a mask, and create something that was completely effortless and could work with your life.”
The 1A masks are designed to be used daily, in place of your moisturiser, but it’s the Molecular Saviour Mist and the Bright Future Overnight Facial that are the true stars. Used in tandem, they form a skincare power couple, one a world-first hydrating time-release peel that sends bursts of healthy hyaluronic acid into the dermis, the other a patented non-evaporating mist that answers the hyaluronic acid’s siren song to quench skin thirst and refine pores. To administer a 30-second facial with professional-level results, Travis suggests what he calls a “mist sandwich”.
“Three nights in a row, mist, add a thick generous layer [of the peel] and mist again, like a sandwich. It gives you the effects of a professional facial overnight, with cumulative results on the third night.”
Travis formulated the mask with the jetsetter in mind. “When you’re on a long-haul flight, you can continuously mist and you’re continuously introducing new moisture, so you reactivate the gel and you can keep doing that for 24 hours. When you land, you’re glowing.”
Like any dynamic duo, the products are most effective in tandem. “Hyaluronic acid is a moisture magnet so you need to provide moisture for it to draw from, because if not it’s going to pull it out from your skin,” Travis explains. “This mist was really designed for people on the go and people who travel all the time. It’s heavier so it clings to your skin cells and withstands evaporation.”
Flying just got slightly more bearable, for our skin at least.
