Amitt K Singh for TMM
He is calm, sharp, intelligent and a handsome cop, who knows his job right. Probably this is the impression we all could make out from the screen presence of Amitt K Singh as Vinod Sharma in Bhaukaal, a web series with more than 100 million views on MX Player. The intelligent looking cop is somewhat similar in his real life, where he knows the art of balancing too. In a detailed conversation with TMM, the young and dynamic actor talks about his philosophy of life, acting and how he is making the best of time during the lockdown.
How is Amit as a person in real and reel life?
As a person, I’m absolutely same, I try to be honest in real and reel life both. As an actor, you get an opportunity to play different characters, but you have to be honest and true to each character you play. This comes with real-life practice. For me, honesty is a habit that I will cherish for life.
Bhaukaal has made a mark, tell us more about your memories of Vinod Sharma?
Oh yes, Bhaukaal has 100+ million views and still counting. I feel extremely happy with the success of my first web-series. I’m overwhelmed with the appreciation and messages I get about my performance. So, I was auditioned for a different character in Bhaukaal, but the producer, Harman Baweja liked my look for Vinod’s character, who’s a polished police officer and very different from other cops in his team. He’s well educated, intelligent, obedient and an honest police officer. The director of the series Jatin Wagle had asked me to come up with 25-30 questions, about Vinod’s character, we discussed those points later, which really helped me in building the character. Although it was a real-life character, so I had to meet the person to study his body language and other minute details. In total, it was a memorable experience and will always be special.
Are you a method actor or an actor with instincts? How do you prepare for a role?
Well, you can say that am a combination of both, but I’m trying to swing to method acting more. I take my own time to prepare for a character. As I said, for preparing Vinod’s character, I met the real-life character and studied him. When I have to play fictional characters, I discuss it with my director and we mutually decide and shape the character. I prefer to do one project at a time so that I can completely get into the skin of the character I’m playing. It helps me to add perfection.
Web series and short films are shaping up in a big way, your thoughts?
As a professional, Amitt K Singh is very positive and I try to look on the brighter side. The digital media is growing and how. Moreover, I feel web contents are original, creative, inspiring and entertaining. Be it any genre, it can be a powerful medium for spreading a message.
In such a short period of time, we have witnessed a few web projects which are a perfect example of originality, well-crafted piece of cinema and have a strong message. Also, I feel that the absence of censorship helps creative minds to tailor the content in a sharp manner so that the message is not lost.
What are the challenges you faced as an actor while performing the roles you’ve played so far?
Well, challenges are meant to be dealt with and should be completed successfully. I seek challenges so that I get a chance to prove myself and overcome it. When I prepare for a character, I take references from my memory lane, because I feel that your mind is very strong. Also, I believe in ‘less is more’. Sometimes, when I can’t relate a scene from my memory, I have to imagine that situation and imagine what could go wrong. So I’m working on unleashing my imagination.
Kaavya is your first main lead web film, tell us more about it.
Big opportunity comes with bigger responsibilities. Kaavya is very special to me, I’m exploring the horror genre for the first time. The film is in post-production and I had a wonderful time at the shoot. The whole team is very cooperative. The director Elvin Raja had given me the freedom to be experimental with my character and we did a month-long workshop before the shoot. I hope audiences are going to have a really good experience while watching the film.
How are you spending your days during the ongoing lockdown?
I’m working on myself. I’m reading books, currently, I’m reading ‘The Power of Now’ by Eckhart Tolle, which is a must-read for everyone. I’m practising meditation, watching some award-winning films on OTT. Also, I’m doing a masterclass (an online learning app) with Samuel Jackson, Neil Gaiman and Natalie Portman, and learning new perspectives of acting. Cleaning and cooking are also a part of my daily routine (laughs).
Moreover, I feel that we have to deal with the challenge of learning to live with the virus. We need to take the required preventive measures as part of our life. Most importantly, social distancing must be followed for a longer period of time.
