Located in the lap of the lush green Sahyadri mountains in Mulshi, Pune is Atmantan Wellness Centre. The integrated wellness destination spa offers an expanse of 42 acres of fitness facilities in addition to world-class spa and wellness therapies ranging from traditional Ayurveda to Pranic chakra cleansing. Nikhil Kapur, Founder Director, Atmantan Wellness Centre and Dr Manoj Kutteri, Wellness Director, Atmantan Wellness Centre talk to TMM about catering to the emotional and physical wellness of their guests in these unprecedented times.
In what ways has the lockdown changed things around and how is Atmantan preparing itself to face them?
Nikhil: Fundamentally our business model remains the same and in fact, has got further strengthened. We have always worked towards delivering result-oriented wellness experiences to our guests and we deliver this by having the highest standards of health, hygiene and safety. To ensure a safe environment for all our guests, we have taken the following key measures:
1) People side: Since we will be operating with reduced room inventory for the next 2-3 months, our entire team of 150 will be staying on the premises. We have residential accommodation for 150 team members. Our GM, senior managers, doctors, the frontline team all stay on the property.
The role of the guest is important to keep the destination safe. Hence, we are sharing with our guests the new screening protocols that include:
– antibody test a day prior to arrival.
– doctor’s screening on arrival and before check-in.
– daily check for all guests at the wellness pavilion.
2) Processes: As shared above, we have enhanced our operating procedures and our team will be spending hours sanitising/disinfecting all the areas so that Atmantan is safe for you. We are using the advanced UVC machine to sanitise the rooms, and public areas every day.
There has been so much anxiety and mental stress in the past few months. At such a time, what do you think Atmantan’s primary agenda will be?
Dr Kutteri: The primary agenda includes emotional health and balance, immunity-boosting, make our guests feel a sort of togetherness within themselves, even with the social distancing outside. We want to provide them with a goal-oriented stay, stress management techniques and improved sleep, a lifestyle that enhances immunity through fitness, diet, sleep, herbs and being one with nature. We want to correct any form of postural issues during lockdown with a deeper approach to ergonomics.
Holistic healing has been the backbone of Atmantan ever since it opened in 2016. Can you tell us some of the principals that it operates on? What exactly do you mean by the term holistic healing?
Dr Kutteri: Holistic healing refers to healing around all dimensions of health – physical, mental, emotional and psychological. It is the synergy between body, mind and soul and the highest level of well-being using alternative therapies. The use of ancient knowledge is combined with evidence-based practices and there is integration between various lifestyle components and drugless modalities.
Can you tell us a bit about the various wellness packages offered by the resort? Will you be making any changes to them or adding some aspects given the current scenario?
Dr Kutteri: The focus will be given to NH, MC, WB and Ayurveda retreats. Treatment SOPs are reworked to ensure maximum safety. There will be added immune-boosting medicines and diet protocols in all the retreats. There will be the highest safety at every wellness touchpoints – classes, consultations, diet and treatments.
How big a part is Ayurveda when it comes to Atmantan’s philosophy?
Dr Kutteri: Ayurveda is an essential part of our offering which is used for various health purposes. Treatments are offered with highest-quality medicines and oils and indigenous herbs. All the classical treatments of Ayurveda Panchakarma is offered at Atmantan. We have made a diet menu that complements Ayurveda programmes and follow an integrated approach of Ayurveda with other complementary therapies.
Ayurveda has been around for centuries but it has been enjoying a major resurgence in India as well as across the world in the past few years. What are your thoughts on that?
Dr Kutteri: Ayurveda has been a remedy for almost 4000-5000 years. Off late, many have understood the importance of it due to the surge in lifestyle ailments. People are reluctant to undertake allopathic medication due to their side effects. Ayurveda medicines are much more tuned to the human body and there are better adaptation and acceptance.
Lastly, what do you think will be the impact of COVID 19 on the hospitality sector post lockdown?
Nikhil: The immediate future (0-6 months) is a tough period for hospitality. And many will struggle for a longer period after that too. Personally, I am very positive since destinations providing meaningful experiences will see a surge in demand. The kind of wellness experiences that Atmantan provides is unparalleled. We have been in touch with our key clients and all of them are waiting to come to Atmantan to focus on their well-being.
