The 11th edition of ART|JOG will be held in Yogyakarta for a month from 4 May to 4 June 2018 at the Jogja National Museum. The fair, which began in 2008, puts artists front and centre, doing away with traditional booths put up by art galleries and presenting works of artists in conversation with each other according to a theme. This year, it is ‘Enlightenment: Towards Various Futures’.

In all, there will be 40 participating artists from Indonesia and abroad, including the Philippines, Singapore and China. Visitors can look forward to another iconic ART|JOG facade from Indonesian contemporary artist Mulyana, who has been selected for this year’s commission. Aside from the popular ‘Merchandise Project’, which allows fairgoers to purchase creations by artists, there will also be a new ‘Daily Performances’ programme that promises to inject new life into the decade-long fair.

Yogyakarta itself is known for being the capital city of art in Indonesia with its prominent art ecosystem that supports a network of artist communities, alongside art practitioners and stakeholders, with frequent art markets and events held for the public. ART|JOG stands out as an established and unique platform where both artists and the public are invited in an open call to submit their works. By expanding the eligibility of submissions beyond professional artists and institutionalised craft, ART|JOG responds to the ground-up development of art that will include fresh faces and talents being introduced to the art scene.

One other special feature of this year’s fair is its distinct attempt to engage children with art. A collaborative theatre performance by Papermoon Puppet Theatre from Indonesia and the Polyglot Theatre from Australia will be presented during the fair. Titled ‘Cerita Anak (Child’s Story)’, the play is a theatre without words that places its audience at centre stage, before transporting them into a viscerally exciting world of art and drama.
