Artbox café
First opened in August 2019 last year Artbox cafe first resident character theme was the popular Pusheen. They named the café Pusheen’s Snack Parlour. The Pusheen theme has now ended and now egg character Gudetama has taken over with Gudetama Lazy Lounge until June 2020.
I have plenty of obsessions, all things design, art, architecture and cute. Artbox café in Brighton is an idea by the same store name. Artbox sells super kawaii that’s (cute) in Japanese, products at their London store. Ranging from plush dolls, stationery, you see the famous Japanese characters Sanrio as San-X, Pusheen, Kamio, Iwako and tokidoki goods direct from Tokyo. I even went to a Hello Kitty cafe character theme in Seoul.
Gudetama Character theme
Located at East Street, the Gudetama Lazy Longue x Artbox café definitely stands out from the crowd. Pastel green and pink painted walls and Sanrio Character’s decals on the window. If you plan to visit, make your way to Artbox café first as you need to place yourself on the virtual queue. Mine was only a 20-minute wait but on busier days it could be hours before seated. There’s also takeout on offer, cute character theme ice cream, plus hot and cold drinks.
The café also has a storefront on the ground floor, selling the current theme Gudetama theme products plus more. The upstairs seat down café, is decked out in Gudetama characters in sweet desserts, paper placemats are even themed.
Artbox cafe Menu
On the Gudetama x Artbox Café menu you have a savoury selection from Sleepy Time Toastie, Gudetama Sailor Soup and Gudetama Hot Doggo. On the other side, you have all the sweet treats, Fruity Sundae with ice cream homemade on-site, Lemon Meringue Nest, Fried Egg waffle Sundae, and mango waffle. Prices start from £7 and there is a great selection of drinks. My original option of the Mango tofu cheesecake was sold out for the day.
For what is, I found the food a bit overpriced and opted for the dessert menu and a hot drink. It’s good to know that Artbox Café doesn’t charge extra for non-diary milk. Enjoying my hot matcha oat milk latte in a cute Gudetama mug. A souvenir coaster is given to every guest.
The Lemon Meringue dish certainly wins for being plated up pretty, the meringue has Gudetama face is filled in the middle with a face and lemon curd. The macaroon is covered in a butt, honey comb ice cream has an edible paper. There are a lot of sweet elements and is best eaten with the honey ice cream and drink.
The service was very good at the beginning, staff that booked the table and served me first was great but when it came to trying to pay the other girl was slow, unattentive, and hard to grab her attention. Overall if you enjoy character-themed cafes and need a spot of cuteness in your life head on down to Artbox Café.
