In a virtual chat with TMM, he talks about everything that revolves around music. Excerpts from the interview:
What is music to Zaman Khan?
Music is my identity, it defines me completely. It’s something that motivates me, keeps me focused and helps me to be a better person.
What is your mantra of connecting with the audience through songs?
Well, I believe that we should keep things very simple because the simpler you keep your music, the better you’ll be able to hit the masses and there will be a section of the audience that would just fall in love with your music. I try to keep it simple, catchy, and add a pinch of originality.
Making covers isn’t as easy as it seems. What is your process of working on a song and re-creating the magic?
Yes, making covers isn’t that easy, as you’re touching a masterpiece which has already been a hit for a very long time. It’s like you’re making something beautiful out of the museum and you’ve to do justice to whatever song you choose.
It’s really tough, but I always ensure to add my pinch of originality, my elements to that piece. Let’s say I’m covering a song of Mohd. Rafi Sahab, I’ll take some voice modulations of Rafi Sahab and then I’ll add my elements to it. It’s a very huge responsibility when you recreate a song, as the pressure of matching up to the same beauty is a lot, and it is extremely important that one should be very creative while working on a cover song.
Zaman Khan,Who is your inspiration to grow in the field of music.
I think I’m very much influenced by the Western music industry, the way they produce a song. We live in an era where a normal composition can do wonders if the song is arranged and produced with efforts. My whole feel depends upon the six strings, as I’m more of a guitarist than a composer or vocalist, so I experiment a lot with the guitar tunings, usually, I don’t follow the standard guitar tunings, I change them according to my feel and the thought process that I’ve at that time. I make sure that my songs are very experimental in terms of the production, but, are very simple, catchy and I make sure to put in a lot of guitar into it!
Zaman Khan,In your recent release “Hum Saath Hai” you’ve not only collaborated with singers like Akhil Sachdeva, Shibani Kashyap, etc but also with YouTuber Bhuvan Bham. How was the experience?
Yeah, if you talk about Hum Saath Hain, I had so much fun doing it! Collaborating with your fellow artists is an amazing experience, and collaborations are always better than competitions. Collaborating with Shibani Kashyap was really lovely as I’ve grown up listening to her and Akhil Sachdeva, he’s more like an elder brother to me, he’s someone I really look up to and if I talk about the YouTube sensation Bhuvan Bam, he’s like family to me. So, this thought just came to me to make a song to tell everyone out there that we’re in this together, so, Hum Saath Hain had that thought process behind it. The whole journey from the recordings to the release was amazing and a huge thanks to everyone for supporting it so much and giving it so much love!
Zaman Khan,Hum Saath Hai brings out a strong and powerful message which has surely been inspiring for all of us. Do you always try to make a difference with your creations?
Well, yes, Hum Saath Hain does bring out a very strong message to all of us and yes, I promise that till the time I’m making music I will keep giving back to society and keep spreading positivity. I’m an artist and a creative person, if I’m angry I’ll just pen down aggressive thoughts, if I’m sad, I’ll compose a song that brings out the sadness in me and if I’m feeling frustrated or annoyed, I keep that in mind that if I’m feeling this way, there would be a lot of people out there feeling the same way. I believe it’s my responsibility to be out there and give something positive and motivating to society and I use my music to do that. I can’t give long speeches, or tell people what to do, for me the best way is to make a song and share that with everyone and I’ll keep on doing that!
