If there’s one thing that never gets old, it’s soulful jazz. And with the recent passing of the queen of soul that was Aretha Franklin – may she rest in peace – there’s no better time to acknowledge this statement. Jazz itself has been through many phases – from acid and fusion to bossa and Latin. Yet, there’s still one fixture you can never remove from the equation: the female blues singer, the soulful centrepiece who brings everything together. Whether she’s crooning, wailing or scat singing, she’ll always get the cool cats swinging, that is, if she knows what she’s doing!
Listening to soulful jazz with a lead singer who knows how to get down is like taking a bite out of a cake that was baked in heaven. Bangkok is currently home to some of the most incredible female soulful jazz talent, visiting from the land where jazz was born: the USA. That’s why I urge you to put on your best dancing shoes, grab your cigars and go listen to anyone of these ladies sing. And you’ll only catch them at Bangkok’s finest – or coolest – establishments.
Coco Rouzier
All the way from Washington D.C., Coco Rouzier’s soulful voice is brought to you with an unforgettable and genuine smile that will be sure to leave you grinning from ear to ear. Her positive energy is just so contagious and unlike many singers – jazz or other – Ms Rouzier has a great gift when it comes to pronunciation: every word is crystal clear, just as if she were speaking directly to you. Catch her soulful sounds at Whisgars (Sukhumvit Soi 23) every Wednesday, FooJohn Building on Thursdays and the The St. Regis Bar every Friday.

Nicole Kidd
No, not Nicole Kidman: Nicole Kidd! Reminiscent of the beautiful sound of the late Ella Fitzgerald, this lady’s voice will bring tears to your eyes, it’s just that good. Voted Miami New Times 2018 “Best Jazz Act”, Kidd decided to hop on a plane and take on a residency (Monday–Saturday) at the Mandarin Oriental’s Bamboo Bar, which has been the place for jazz in Bangkok for decades. Bangkok is so lucky to have Ms Kidd on its soil and if I were you, I wouldn’t let the moment pass you by as this lady is hot stuff and who knows where she’ll be next!

Tere Howard
Tere Howard, AKA The Soul Mama caught my attention when I heard her singing a gorgeous version of Summertime in her very own unique and authentic way. When a jazz singer can take a very well-known song and make it completely their own by owning it with their own flavour, you know they’ve got talent. Hailing from Pennsylvania, Ms. Howard has been touring Asia for a few years and has paid her blues at Bangkok’s hotspots such as The Banyan Tree Vertigo Too and the Oriental Bar. Now you can catch her crooning at The Pathumwan Princess Hotel from Tuesdays to Saturdays until the end of August and Mondays to Fridays throughout September, 2018. You won’t regret seeing this lady sing!
