Back to the 80s with Burberry

We got up close and personal with Burberry’s capsule collection at Siam Paragon, which features roughly 20 reissued pieces from the brand’s archive, reinvented by chief creative officer Christopher Bailey and rereleased as part of the runway collection we saw in the February 2018 show. Important point to remember: Burberry doesn’t do “seasons”; it picks its months wisely for the release of new collections, and February saw the release of such. From track pants to vibrant sweaters with cool graphics and an extra “S” – Burberrys – to vintage check totes with emerging rainbow flags, puffer jackets and reversible harringtons with glimpses of the rainbow, the collection is certainly fun, playful and reminiscent of an 80s look. The collection from which the capsule collection is derived is called “Time” – seeking to reflect the past, celebrate the present and herald the future.

The playful and exaggerated silhouettes and rainbow prints were a clear nod to the LGBTQ community. Being Bailey’s final show with the esteemed British fashion house, it was a most admirable move, as Bailey admitted that he wants Burberry to be an organisation that “stands for something”. Judging by the response the collection has got on Burberry’s Instagram, with reference to a particular picture of two men kissing – captioned “Jack and Thomas” – it’s obvious why organisations as big as Burberry still need to make a stand. The basic human right of being allowed to love whomever you please unfortunately still seems to upset many and incite unnecessary anger.

The collection really does take us back to the 80s in more than one way, as the amount of below-the-belt comments and debate stirred by the February show is reminiscent of a past rhetoric that really should no longer be in existence. People should be allowed to love whomever they please. It’s that simple.

We are grateful for collections like Time, organisations like Burberry, and people like Christopher Bailey, who continue to shine the light on important messages through their medium of expression. Have a browse through our gallery to get a glimpse of this vibrant and daring collection.

Only pieces from the capsule collection are available for purchase at Siam Paragon or via www.burberry.com. The rest of the Time collection is currently only available for pre-order.
