Singer, style icon, performer…he has many epithets. In some way, he is one of the fresh faces of the singing fraternity who has taken the wind off the insiders with his dynamic sense of camera presence and singing. One thing that keeps him away from controversies and industry bizarre is his gratitude towards his work and disinterest in the happenings. He is happy in his own space and wishes to make India proud. Excerpts from a freewheeling chat with THE GURU RANDHAWA.
Guru Randhawa, Ever since you became a star, how has life changed over the years?
Nothing much has changed; my life is still the same! I still enjoy eating dal-chawal the most. Besides work, my life is quite the same.
You recently collaborated with Pitbull. How was the experience, elaborate?
It was great working with Pitbull (sir) and was like a dream come true collaboration. I always wanted to represent my village, my state and my country at the international level, so this opportunity was one step towards that representation. I feel, as an artist, it’s my responsibility to diversify my music and spread the beauty of my culture.
You have been working with major labels and you are a prominent face in Bollywood too. What’s stopping you from making the complete shift to Bollywood?
Nothing is stopping. I’m in a very happy space, doing my work. I have done Bollywood movie songs too and independent music too. I love to create a balance.
Punjabi artistes are quite a rage abroad. Do you agree? What has made them so popular abroad?
Punjabi singers are very popular abroad because the language, the music, the style and the lyrics tend to beautifully connect to the lives of the people. The lyrics and the meaning behind them give an emotional touch to their lives and they are very simple.
There is a sudden hike in liking for Punjabi music, all thanks to you and a few more. What is the reason for the change, any clue?
Honestly, the Punjabi music scene has been vibrant ever since with artist Gurdas Maan, Babbu Maan, and many more. I was exposed to music with TV and radio, so definitely it was a household scene. In today’s time, it has expanded beyond and I am glad so many good talents are coming out from Punjab. Yes, bringing the song to Bollywood adds more charm to it and every person from the different part of the nation can hear it. It gives you a bigger platform. So, I believe it is the kind of music one creates that makes it or breaks it; it can be from any part of the world.
Still, many Punjabi pop/folk singers feel they’re being sidelined in this. What do you have to say?
As I said, there is a right time for everything. Every artist starts from the base and gets recognition when the time is right. But we have to keep doing what we love always.
Guru Randhawa, How different it is to sing for Bollywood films than for your own albums?
Well, I feel independent when I am doing singles. Singles have an aura of their own and there is no pressure on the artist in terms of creativity. This is the magic of independent music. In Bollywood films, it is usually as per the movie’s situation. It is fun working on Bollywood music too as so many great minds come together for one song.
What makes you happier- singing for live audience or recording and why?
Performing live is the best thing I enjoy. When the audience resonates with my music and sings every single word from the song, it is blissful. The high of performing live is unmatched, the thrill, the love, the energy all makes it an unforgettable experience.
Guru Randhawa, You have a huge female fan following, any crazy fan moment?
All my fan moments are very close to my heart. Everything that they do is very heartwarming. Especially, when they take time out from their schedule and make a painting of me or anything like that. I’m always thankful and grateful to them.
Guru Randhawa,Do you ever feel like to break away from your image?
No, never!
Nowadays, many people believe that the quality of the lyrics has gone down. What is your opinion?
I believe one should listen to the music they really like and enjoy and ignore the ones they don’t like. There are so many songs with good lyrics, we can listen to them.
What else is on your plate at present?
Recently, I had two song releases in Arjun Patiala movie and I am producing a Punjabi Film ‘TaraMira’. Also, I have a new single coming out soon!
