birthday surprises – Notting Hill Kitchen

With the name Notting hill Kitchen; you wouldn’t be able to guess the cuisine straight away. Opened only last year, adjacent to the famous Portobello Road. There’s a bit of a mix in the small plate dining on offer, Spanish, French and Portuguese.

We started the night with complementary sliced bread stored in a tiny sack, then the spider crab mousse and dehydrated mussel in a doughnut. I love anything to do with soft shell crabs and it was interesting to have it in a foamy mousse form.

Next came the Tiborna alentejana, looking like the upside down bridge yoga position, with a sparkling ruby streaky piece of meat lying on top of the toasted sourdough. The Mac Silva cod burgers shine through, sharp citrus flavours and crispy batter revealed a cod that flaked instantly.

To be very honest, the seabass ceviche wasn’t very memorable; it did look pretty garnished well with, fennel, corn, tomato and lime.

Jamon croquetas came in delicate tiny balls; slicing through them revealed gooey lava melting away, the caramelised onion was heavenly.

Slices of thick Acorn fed pork neck arrived before our eyes, super tender, rendered in bright raw pink. Beneath it a nested a red cabbage and lupin cous cous. The following dish Aspargos and tomato with saffron risotto, was a good porridge like consistency I would have like the saffron to stand out a little more.

Patatas brava is one of my favourite things to order from a tapas menu, jenga like blocks stacked high with a spicy mayonnaise and paprika. Although it was triple fried the chips seem to fell apart easily and was too soft in the middle.

Before the desserts, a surprise came out, as it was my birthday week. Zomato and Noting hill Kitchen came out with a candlelit plate with “Happy Birthday Le”. The cheesecake came with toffee popcorn and chocolate truffles. Thank you both for spoiling me I really enjoys this dessert.

Finally, the last dish was a sweet plate and Ginginha shot, a lot of people didn’t want to take the shot so I took it for them. The dish was a perfect way to cleanse the palate.

Overall I think the meal was decent, there’s room for improvement in some of the dishes. The location is good and the place is spacious to hold events and have private parties. Portions are modest along with prices for each plate.
