Blast from the Past – Malvika Raaj

Malvika Raaj, an Indian model and actress, who made her Bollywood debut way back in 2001 with Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham as Pooja, has come a long way. In a free-wheeling conversation with TMM, she talks about her journey, future file and her idea about fashion and style.

Malvika RaajMalvika Raaj, You started your journey with the biggies of Bollywood. Any memory from the set of K3G that is still fresh in your mind and you want to share.
it’s the best thing that has happened to me till date. I just remember having a blast with the entire cast and crew. I used to wake up every morning with a smile and get ready for the shoot. Karan Johar being my favourite person on set always stimulated me to learn as much as from him and to be frank, make the best of the opportunity!

Malvika Raaj, How did acting happen to you?
As a child, I was very tempted to see films and enact the characters in real life. With time I realised that I can be an actor, but was clueless about how to go about and learn the methodology.  And then Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham happened. It was the turning point of my career and I understood that cinema is my playground.

Tell us a bit about the kind of roles that you wish to play on the silver screen.
This might sound bizarre in the context of Hindi cinema, but I really want to do an action power packed role. It will be like a dream come true.

Malvika RaajOne thing about acting that tempts you a lot and why?
The idea of playing different roles and be a different person every day is something that always tempts me and I can do anything to make it happen. Life is never monotonous for an actor and that is something I want to live my life with.

Between web series and cinema, what is more, interesting to you and why?
My heart says cinema because it’s my dream to watch myself on the big screen, but if an interesting web series comes my way then why not! After all, the web has redefined the world of entertainment and it is the future. It will be a learning experience for me to be part of the change and contribute some content to the biggest business of entertainment.

Tell us about your upcoming projects and what are you doing at present?
There are a couple of projects lined up, that will be announced later this year. It is going to be a mix of Bollywood and South Indian films and the audience will get to see a lot of variation. I hope they will like it and appreciate as well!

Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?
That’s quite a long way to talk about. I believe I will be able to make a place for myself in the world of Indian cinema and will be acting for all the big banners.

When it comes to fashion and style, how do you define each? What is your comfort wear?
Fashion is style and style is comfort. If you are not comfortable in what you wear you can never pull off even the most fashionable outfit. For me, my comfort cloth is my ripped jeans and a loose white T-shirt.

One Indian fashion designer you love for his/her work and why?
Sonaakshi Raaj. I’m not being biased, but I love her clothes and I actually know the hard work and personal touch she gives to every single garment she crafts. And of course, everyone’s favourite Manish Malhotra. I know when I get married I am going to wear a Manish Malhotra lehenga for sure!
