Some people just never disappoint and the same can be said of Akhil Sachdeva. The composer and singer with the melodious voice has once again proved that when it comes to romantic tracks, he is right up there with the very best. His song Galliyaan from Alt Balaji’s web series Bebakee is a beautiful track of love, separation and heartbreak and has been appreciated by his fans.
Best remembered for Humsafar from Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya and Tera Ban Jaunga from last year’s Kabir Singh, the singer has certainly added another feather to his well-feathered cap. TMM caught up with the talented musician to learn more about his musical journey and what he has planned for his fans in the near future.
Tell us about the vibe of your latest song Galliyaan. How did you come up with the composition?
I was given the narration and the characters’ behaviour and the situation where they needed a song. I backed my instincts, went with what came naturally to me and that’s how I got Galliyaan. The vibe is different from my other songs. The soul has been maintained – which is my trademark with a good melody. This time, the phrasing of the lyrics also made it quite appealing. Vaibhav Pani produced and arranged it so amazingly, so credit also goes to him. I feel it’s our song, not just mine.
Is it different to compose and sing for a web show as compared to films?
I make music for the love of music and I never think about the platform as I give my blood and soul to my music.
You started your music career with your band Nasha. What have you learnt as a stage performer in these ten years?
I was the first-ever artist to form a Sufi Rock band in the country called Nasha and I am glad I still maintain the level and vibe that I have on stage. I feel it’s my pure connection with the audience and the way I make them feel special, that gives me my special place as a performer and definitely my energy which is God’s gift.
Would you say that Humsafar and Tera Ban Jaunga have been turning points in your musical journey?
I feel that every second that I have lived as a musician, since the past 12 years, that have led to what I am today. All the struggle, the pain, the dreams and everything I have gone through have made Humsafar and Tera Ban Baunga. So, yes they are the turning points which are the accumulation of every drop of sweat and blood I have given to my music.
Some of your best songs are the ones with a romantic vibe. Do you enjoy singing love songs? Which is your all-time favourite love song by any singer?
Love is one of the biggest emotions that we have and I am all about love and soul. I think that’s the need of the hour, as only love can win over all the hurdles and so much of negativity that humanity is facing today.
What do you enjoy more, composing or singing?
Composing and singing both, are challenges that I enjoy. To compose is to produce something- it’s like giving birth to a baby, so it has its special place but once it’s done, it’s the different and the correct approach to singing that excites me. Not to forget, I love writing for my compositions as you feel closer to the song when you live every aspect of it.
How did you keep yourself busy during the lockdown? Do you miss performing live?
Yes, of course. I am born to be on stage and it’s my dream to die on stage. You can keep me away from the stage for as long as you want but you can’t keep a lion from roaring. I’m learning and unlearning so many things about myself and definitely, it’s my music that keeps me alive and lively.
What’s the plan for once things are back to normal?
There is no plan. I live in the present and that’s what decides my future, so living life and spreading love and happiness is my plan for the rest of my life.
