Changing For Better: Zoya Afroz

Zoya AfrozChange is the only constant, believes Zoya Afroz, Miss India International 2021, Glamanand Supermodel India, who started her modeling and acting journey at the age of 3. Today, she is a leading name in the industry and is all set for her web series this October. She recently won the title of Miss India International 2021 and has observed that in today’s time, modeling is no more a carefree career and it calls for social responsibilities and much more. In a chat with TMM, Zoya talks about her career and all that went into while preparing for the Glamanand Supermodel India Pageant.

How and when did modeling happen to you?
I was 3, when my mom noticed an advertisement on television which was about Rasna Maha Search, where they asked to send pics of your kids to a particular address. My mom, took some random pics of mine and sent them to the said address, and soon we received a letter and I was selected for the Rasna ad. That memory of shooting in front of the camera is still alive in my mind. And then the first professional advertisement I did was for a children’s clothing brand and I still have that copy of the magazine with me. So, slowly one thing led to the other, and today when I look back, the modeling industry has changed a lot. Earlier, people were carefree, and today as a model you hold a lot of responsibilities. My journey as a model and as an actor has surely changed me as a person.

What makes an individual a ‘good model’?
Whether you are an actor or a model, you need to have strong observation skills and it is also important to understand how good you know yourself. Once you acquire both skills, it becomes easy to narrate a character on screen or on-ramp.

Share a glimpse of what all went into preparation for Glamanand Supermodel India.
A lot went into the preparation. For me, more than physical training it was about mental preparation and for that, I did a lot of research and watched the previous pageant shows to understand how one should answer on stage with the presence of mind. Also, for the talent round, I prepared a semi-classical dance performance, because I think dance is one art that helps narrate a lot about you as a person. From expression to body control, your confidence, it narrates everything on point. And for the national costume round, I wanted to present my state Uttar Pradesh and for that, I chose a silver lehenga, which represented the pristine beauty of the Taj Mahal.

For every model, being fit is very important. What is your fitness routine?
For me, fitness has a lot more to do with healthy eating habits than anything else. While I am trying to create a balance between physical training and my diet, I make sure that all my meals have fresh fruits and vegetables and I drink 8-12 glasses of water every day.

One good thing and one bad thing about being a model.
The best thing about being in this industry is that you get to travel and explore life a lot. I remember I was shooting for Kingfisher Calendar 2020 in Cape Town and I was spellbound by the beauty of the place. I made sure to travel across the city, eat and enjoy the local ambience as much as I could. As far as a bad thing is concerned, I won’t call it a bad thing, rather the sacrifice that one has to do is in terms of a disturbed sleep cycle. The odd call times make it difficult to maintain a disciplined sleep cycle.

Modeling calls for hectic work hours. How do you create a balance between your work and personal life?
I make sure to live in the moment and that’s how I create a balance. So, when I am working I don’t think about my personal life and once the camera is off and I am home, I don’t think about work. I guess this balance has helped me come a long way and this is what I suggest to others as well.

When it comes to your beauty regime, one desi nuskha you swear by and why?
Oiling my hair is one desi nushka that I had been avoiding for years, but recently I started the practice and I can see a lot of change and now I swear by this desi nuskha as it has improved my hair quality and shine.

What are your future plans in the modeling industry?
My idea is to work more, be more and push the envelope as much as I can. I have been signed for three seasons of a web series releasing in the month of October and then I have to prepare for the International Pageant, so a lot is in my plate and I am enjoying it!
