Think you know your gin? Whether you consider yourself a connoisseur or could use a few pointers on the spirit, the home of the largest gin collection in London (more than 500 varieties) is probably a good place to brush up. For a proper “gin education,” Rosewood London is offering a weekly masterclass in The Gin Bar where expert bartenders with lead guests through the history of gin, production process, and of course, a tasting.
“The idea for the Gin Masterclasses was not just to offer guests the opportunity to try different types of gin,” said Kristian Smith, bartender at The Gin Bar, in speaking to Elite Traveler. “The idea was to create a class for those looking to broaden their knowledge of the botanical spirit and learn about its history. Gin has such a historic past in the UK and has had a major influence on society in London. Beyond the UK, guests of the Gin Masterclass learn about the historic origins of gin, with juniper berries tracing back to Egyptian kings and to ancient Olympian athletes. The masterclass then takes guests back to modern times, where we discuss how it is now the most diverse and exciting spirit available. The idea of the Gin Masterclass is to offer an opportunity for guests to taste their way through history, placing themselves in each historic era while sampling a related serve.”
Priced at approximately $80, the 90-minute classes accommodate up to 10 guests and include a welcome gin and tonic, bar bites from Holborn Dining Room and a sampling of four gins. Stay on to sip special cocktails created for The Gin Bar that play into the history of both the spirit and the city. This week’s choice of Wolf’s Nose is inspired by a cocktail that dates back to the 18th-century ‘gin craze,’ when gin palaces were popping up across London. Combing a classic gin base with the richness of a stout, the cocktail is finished with subtle smoky flavors from the liqueurs. Should a lesson in gin prompt you to see how the spirit expresses itself in a variety of cocktails, the delicate Hogarth’s Lane, floral Lady Genever and fruity Punch Courage are also on the menu.
“The gins selected for the new cocktail menu were chosen for their botanical flavor profile, each of which has been matched with other flavors in the cocktails to enhance the flavor of the gin,” added Smith. “The Wolf’s Nose, in which we use East London Liquor Company’s barrel-aged gin has a flavor profile to match with the stout beer used in the cocktail.”
After class, the Manor House Suite is our Elite Traveler-approved accommodation. Named to the list of Top 100 Suites 2017 in the Family category, the Manor House is at the peak of exclusivity with its own zip code.
