BAPE and COMME des GARÇONS CDG, two behemoths of Japanese streetwear, are reuniting on another logo-heavy collaboration.
On September 4, the duo will release a fairly approachable lineup of co-branded staples including graphic T-shirts, accessories, and — most notably — a pair of camouflage BAPE STAs.
The pieces don’t differ much from BAPE x CDG’s previous team-up, which will likely suit fans just fine. Similar to last time, a mash-up of BAPE’s APE HEAD and COMME des GARÇONS’ logo is applied to tees, bucket hats, and socks. A collared shirt and hoodie take a similar approach, applying CdG branding to BAPE’s signature camo print.
Shoppers will likely find the collab’s BAPE STAs the most cop-able pieces from the collection. Arriving in both white and black colorways, the iconic sneaker is redone in BAPE camo, accented with the CdG logo at the heel.
When the collection was revealed on Instagram, one user commented on the teaser: “THIS GONNA BE CRAZY.”
But is it?
On one hand, CDG is COMME des GARÇONS’ most accessible line, so the simplicity makes sense. Its partnerships — with BAPE, with Stüssy — cement the sub-label as a hot commodity, inviting frenzied crowds to the BAPE shop-in-shop located within Dover Street Market Ginza.
On the other hand, as we’ve said on this very site, plenty of brands are collaborating merely for collaboration’s sake.
Still, any CDG and BAPE team-up will obviously draw plenty of attention, considering Rei Kawakubo’s success with retooling classic Nike silhouettes. It might be camo, but the CDG BAPE STA stands out in a sea of indistinguishable collabs.
