Allow Contra to take you on an adventurous food journey. The Lower East Side, dinner-only restaurant offers a tasting menu focusing on New American cuisine that focuses on locally sourced vegetables and fruits and meats. It’s an ultra-trendy restaurant that draws visitors for its experimental style — think: raw squash with sorghum kernels or Wagyu with chamomile-flavored butter presented in a whimsical display. The young owners, in their 20s, take many risks that make each dish exciting and surprising — most likely why the restaurant has one Michelin star. There are eight courses served throughout the night (there are two menus, one which is vegetarian) and dessert routinely steals the show. The menu is always changing, so you can go multiple times without ever having the same experience twice. Contra is also known for its delicious bread and impressive selection of natural wines. The owners also started Wildair, a natural-wine bar, and a Neapolitan pizza joint in the neighborhood.
