Delhi guy Jatin Sarna shot to fame with his diabolical gangster role Bunty in Netflix’s first Indian original series Sacred Games.
Today, web and online media is the biggest obsession. How do you handle challenges and competition?
More than obsession, they are the bliss for actors like us, who had been waiting for an opportunity to showcase our talent on a platform where the masses could see us. The web media has broken the physical boundaries and now people can access the quality content of their taste and appreciate or reject it as well at a single click. As an actor, the biggest challenge for me is to get trapped in the category of stereotype. After the success of Sacred Games, the offers that I am getting are on the same line and that’s the biggest challenge to overcome. As far as competition is concerned, the race is with inner self to be better than before, and as we all know, that process is never-ending.
Tell us about your first project as an actor. How did the role happen?
It all started in my childhood, where my elder sister played the role of my guide and pushed me to participate in all co-curricular activities. From fancy dress competition to the theatre, she made me to everything and soon I started loving it all. Later, Shri Ram Centre for Performing Arts came in my life and changed the wave of the career. As soon as I finished the course, I was offered a job in the production house of Sri Ram Centre. While working there, I got my first television break in form of Kyuki Jeena Issi ka Naam Hai followed by my silver screen break in form of Gandhi to Hitler.
Social media is still a democratic and non-censored platform of entertainment. Comment.
This medium of entertainment has actually united the entire nation through a single click and that’s the power. Today, from success to failure and ill-treatment to award, we have an eye on every single activity of the industry. Even the paid content is clearly shown as sponsored output and thus, people know what to choose and what to reject. As far as creativity is concerned, this mode of entertainment has provided a platform to the struggling writers. Now, everyone has some way or the other to showcase their talent and the best part is, you get to interact with your audience, get an instant feedback and channelize the energies in the right direction.
Sex is still a taboo in India. Do you think web series can make a difference in this direction?
I hope so! The core of the issue lies in education. In India, we are very much culture and rules-driven. We are not ready to accept the change with a practical approach. It is important to understand what is right and wrong and this can be done only through education. I feel it is not just about sex, but many other taboos of the society that can be cured with the help of the internet and online media.
What’s your take on nepotism in the entertainment industry?
We need to understand that nepotism as a process and concept are very natural. The weak point is the discrimination it creates with the outsiders. As an actor, I also wanted to have a grand launch under a big banner, but it didn’t happen. Acting is an art and it polishes with experience, the day we understand this idea, things will change and even fresh faces from outside the film fraternity world will be treated nicely. The whole agenda is the difference of treatment of talent and nothing else.
Every actor has a mentor, who teaches the nuances of reel life. Who is your guru and how he/she has impacted your career?
Honestly, I am learning with my own experiences and that is the truth. In life at large, my father, Akshay Kumar, Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni have had impacted my thought process and perception a lot. And in terms of acting, the bodywork of Kangana Ranaut and Vidya Balan always gives me that push to bring the best.
