By Lauren Jade Hill
With a client roster encompassing famous names such as Vice President Joe Biden, Ronald Perelman, Judd Apatow and Leslie Mann, Bob Iger, Rick Yorn and Conan O’Brien, the interior designer Victoria Hagan has become one of the most sought after designers in the United States. From a ranch in Montana to a Hamptons beach house, the designer has taken on a diversity of projects but each one is distinguished by her signature style. Showcasing a number of these projects, Victoria is set to launch her new coffee table book, Dream Spaces. Ahead of the book’s launch on October 10, 2017, we talk to Victoria about her celebrated work.
How would you describe your design style?
Whether the project is modern or traditional, I always strive for a classic American point of view.
What do you consider to be your greatest achievement?
Aside from my sons, I would have to say the great working relationships I have with clients—many of whom I’ve worked with on multiple projects over the past 20 years—is one of my greatest joys and achievements. The trust they continually place in me is tremendously gratifying and inspiring.
What have your greatest career highlights been?
Being inducted into the Interior Design Hall of Fame was a great honor, and I’m always flattered to be listed on the AD 100 and Elle Decor’s A-List Designers. Being recognized by your peers is very special and humbling.
Are there any projects you’ve been particularly proud of?
Being asked to design One Naval Observatory a few years ago, which serves as the official residence of the Vice President of the United States, was an honor I am very proud of. The sense of history and continuity is awe-inspiring.
What’s the most challenging project you’ve had?
It happened at the beginning of my career. I was asked to design an iconic Palm Beach home for Ronald Perelman. At the time I had never designed anything near that scale, so it was quite a challenge. And by the way, did I mention he wanted it completed in three months? It taught me a few important lessons: anything is possible, fulfilling expectations makes for happy clients, it’s important to step out of your comfort zone every once in a while and ultimately there’s no substitute for hard work and dedication.
What aspirations do you have for the future?
I love that great design always looks to the future, and I’m excited to create interiors that reflect my clients’ ever-changing lifestyles.
Tell us about your new book.
The new book is called Dream Spaces, and it features 10 projects in different areas throughout the country, including Aspen, Palm Beach, Nantucket, Montana and New York. What’s unique about them is that none is a primary residence. They are all second and third homes. I view each as a testament to the power of dreaming, where my clients’ wishes have been granted and where they can feel comfortable just being themselves.
Why should people get their copy?
It’s a fun look into the process of design and a peek into some of the most beautiful locations in the country. Hopefully it will be as fun a journey for the reader as it has been for me.
