Dexter
If you have been following my Melbourne adventures than you would have gotten up to day 4. Since it was quite a long post, this is my additional post for my meal at Dexter in Preston one evening. Dexter is all about the meat and buns, known for the non-traditional American BBQ style.
The food
Dexter was only moments away from the area I was staying Preston and it had been on my to-go list for food. Seated up on high chairs with the family of 9 we enjoyed sharing plates and mains.
We had our hot meat doughnuts, 3 for $12. Yes, they came looking just like the sugary fluffy stuff that you usually see but instead of jam, there’s meat. They are quite heavy on the dough, then the light fluffy stuff I’m used to.
I don’t know about you, but I love a bit of grilled corn, and the burnt sriracha corn $7.50 made no exception. My special technique is to cut the corn off the cob with a knife instead of using hands to bit around the cob. With the spritz of lime and chilli’s made the dish a perfect palate cleanser.
The fried chicken came with an Asian style dipping sauce. The black pepper on the breaded coating is entirely visible. Even though the wings are deeply fried not a drop of grease is visible on the parchment paper.
For mains, I chose a chicken burger since I didn’t fancy beef or pork. It arrived piled up in the middle with a big chunk of buttermilk fried chicken, and loads of green chilli slaw. Since the chicken has been marinade with buttermilk, the chicken meat is so soft and butter-like and biting into the crunchy layer was so satisfying. Brioche buns are pillow soft and stood against breaking apart throughout eating.
Most of the party enjoyed soft drinks with our BBQ feast and it was my first time trying Australia Capi soft drinks.
