We all know that exfoliating your skin is an important step in any healthy skincare regimen, but what is often overlooked is our lips. We tend to think that because they’re so delicate, we mustn’t scrub them. Truth is, our lips need exfoliation just as much as the best of our bodies do, especially in the colder months when they tend to get dry and chapped.
This weekend, why not try to make your own DIY lip scrub? It is super easy, and quite fun to do. All you need is a couple basic kitchen ingredients such as sugar and honey — which also means these DIY lip scrubs will taste really good, too!
Here are 5 simple, natural DIY lip scrub recipes to whip up on this rainy weekend.
Chocolate Scrub
Brown sugar gently exfoliates while cocoa butter and coconut oil lock in the moisture on dry lips. A dash of cocoa powder adds a dose of nourishing antioxidants.
- 1 tablespoon cocoa butter
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
- 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
Melt cocoa butter in a microwave-safe bowl. Transfer to a small jar and stir in the coconut oil. Refrigerate until the mixture has partially hardened then stir in the brown sugar and cocoa. Apply to lips once a week.

Lavender Latte Scrub
Coffee grounds buff away dry skin and honey is a humectant to attract and lock in moisture. Add a drop of healing lavender oil to soothe irritated skin.
- 1 tablespoons ground coffee
- 1/2 – 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 drop lavender essential oil
In a small bowl combine the unused coffee grounds and honey. Add the lavender essential oil and stir to combine. Smooth a small amount of the scrub onto clean, dry lips. Let the mixture sit on you lips for 30 seconds and then massage your lips with your fingertip. Rinse and follow with lip balm. You can store any extras in a small jar in the fridge.
Rose Milk Scrub
My chapped lips loved this soothing mixture that uses milk’s lactic acid to exfoliate, rather than a scrub. Rose oil is anti-inflammatory to ease irritated skin, and the subtle rose smell and flavor was a relaxing bonus.
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1 drop rose essential oil
Combine the milk and essential oil in a small dish. Dip a cotton ball into the mixture and apply to the lips. Let the liquid sit on your lips for 5 minutes (you can hold the cotton ball to your lips if you want). Refrigerate any extras and use within 2 weeks.

Berry Scrub
Strawberries are loaded with citric acid, which help polish lips along with raw sugar. Plus you’ll get a dose of vitamin C to help combat signs of aging around your mouth.
- 1 strawberry (other berries like blueberries will work too)
- 1/2 teaspoon coconut oil
- 2 teaspoons raw sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon honey
Mash strawberry with a fork then add coconut oil, raw sugar and honey. Gently massage a small amount into your lips. You don’t really need to rinse it off, just blot away the excess.
