Dream design: Inside the Infiniti Q Inspiration Concept car

Infiniti, Nissan’s premium vehicle division, presented a next-generation car design that truly wowed and was the talk of the motoring town. The bold Infiniti Q Inspiration Concept car was unveiled at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan last Monday.

Strikingly minimalist yet packing a punch, it has an innovative VC-Turbo engine. The engine combines turbocharged gasoline power with the torque and efficiency of a four-cylinder diesel engine, which gives greater driver control.

Also, because the 2.0-litre VC-Turbo is a lot more compact, weighing 18kg lesser than Infiniti’s conventional 3.5-litre V6, it requires less space in the engine bay. Thus, the A-pillars were allowed to be moved further back and the concept’s cabin has been extended bigger than most medium-sized sedans.

Infiniti also claims that the new engine “has liberated Infiniti’s designers from the constraints of powertrain architecture to realise a spacious interior.” The interior has a sci-fi feel with black and white leather accented by arresting lines of orange. The centre console seems to be floating while thin-frame individual ‘zero gravity’ seats maximise legroom.

The dashboard is trimmed in birch wood with a traditional Japanese finish that leaves the grain still noticeable.

But it really is the exterior that has gotten motorheads revved up. First, there’s the grille. It is optical illusion welded with Art Deco. Looked from the front, you can see small fins; but step to the right or left, they disappear.

The headlamps themselves too look like there aren’t any lamps at all. Infiniti’s hallmark ‘human-eye’ headlamps have evolved to accommodate powerful LED lights hidden in the body.

It’s also super cool, and supervillain-y, that the Infiniti Q Inspiration Concept car has no side mirrors or door handles, and its wheels have a trippy trapezoid design. Oh, and did we mention that the car’s pillarless doors open suicide-style?

The car is also set apart by having a swooping line for a spine. Even from the rear, we appreciate its sweeping top, decked out with a full panoramic glass roof that curves seamlessly into the glass.
