MAY – SEPTEMBER 2016
The yearly summer festival in this original 18th century theater offers new productions of 17th and 18th century operas and attracts audiences from all over the world.
The opera house itself is situated in the grounds of the impressive Drottningholm Palace, and both the opera house and palace are UnESco World Heritage Sites. The immaculately preserved theater was constructed in 1766 at the request of Queen Lovisa Ulrika, with an auditorium playfully decorated using paint, stucco, and papier mâché. The venue is prized for the restoration and regular use of its 18th century stage machinery which add a unique charm to performances. All the historicallyinformed costumes are designed and made in the theater’s own costume atelier.
