“With a good pair of shoes, one can conquer the world.” Your outfit can be enhanced drastically by putting on a pair of spotless leather shoes. The great thing about buying quality leather shoes is that, with proper care, they will last for decades. As they say, “With great shoes come great responsibility” and thus, it is indispensable to protect the investment by maintaining and polishing it from time to time.

First and foremost, to maintain the leather shoes one needs a piece of cloth, preferably of a softer material. A pro-tip is that the older the cloth is, the better it proves to be for polishing and cleaning purposes. With minimal exertion, you can wipe off the dirt instantly from the leather shoes. Technically, no leather shoes are really waterproof, but if your shoes are exposed to wet conditions or completely soaked in water, you can control the damage effectively by gently towel-drying the exteriors and placing newspapers/tissues on the inside to help soak up excess moisture and let the shoe dry on its own for 10 -12 hours in room temperature under the fan to speed up the drying process. Using a hairdryer or any other heating device will only result in the leather turning hard and brittle since leather cannot withstand external heat.

Using beeswax to polish your leather shoes is highly advisable. Wrap your index and central finger in a piece of cloth and after dipping it in Beeswax, polish the shoes in a circular motion. Once the beeswax is applied on both the shoes, use the bristle shoe brush to rub off excess polish from all sides until your shoes are spotless and shiny. A relatively unknown, yet pivotal fact about leather is that the leather is to be kept hydrated. To hydrate the leather, repeat the same cleaning process but this time dipping the cloth in a few drops of water instead of the Beeswax. This process of hydrating the leather shall help you expand the lifespan of your shoes by preventing it from cracking, drying out or turning hard and brittle.
Patent leather shoes are the easiest to maintain and come with top-notch glossy finishing. Furthermore, these shoes do not require the process of polishing as they already have a preventive coating on them. In order to keep these leather shoes ever-shiny and stylish, it is advisable to clean them in regular time intervals so that dust and dirt do not settle on them. It is important to remember that no other kind of polish must be used on the shoes since they are manufactured with preventive coating.
Shoes fabricated by Suede are sensitive and cannot be polished with Beeswax or cream polish. This is the natural characteristic of this type of leather. Particularly in lighter-colored suede leather stains, dust or abrasion is immediately visible. Therefore, such leather must be protected. Despite all the protection, it is best to not use this type of leather during dampened weather. To clean a suede shoe, one must always make sure to brush the shoe in one direction in order to take off the dust & dirt and to avoid the change in texture- dark and light. Since suede cannot be polished, there are various ways to maintain them. All across markets, there are water-resistant sprays available that can be sprayed over the shoes.
To do that, one must hold the shoe at a distance and sprinkle the water-resistant spray all over the shoes. Suede shoes can also be sent to shoe laundries as they use shoe shampoos to clean them thoroughly. It is important to note that all types of leather shoes can be made water-resistant but not waterproof. If one follows the above tips and tricks to maintain a shoe one can restore and retain the texture to its full glory every time and prevent them from weathering or losing its shape and color. To preserve the beauty of leather shoes, make sure to prevent them from the strong sunlight by keeping them in anti-dust bags. On the contrary, Suede leather shoes are best when kept out in open-air but also away from direct sunlight.
