Perched in a picturesque courtyard within Via Mizner, Pizza al Fresco, with its Mediterranean blue umbrellas and decorative fountains, elicits thoughts of dining on the Amalfi Coast. The wood-burning brick oven pizza is as Italian as the ambience. Though every pie is worth sampling, the star is the Al Fresco, made with tomato and mozzarella and topped with fresh arugula, slices of prosciutto, and shaved parmesan—like a salad and a pizza in one. There’s so much to love about Grato, chef Clay Conley’s charming trattoria on South Dixie Highway. Here, diners can belly up to the pizza bar to watch their pies created in real time and cooked to crispy perfection in the wood-fired oven. Vegetarians should opt for the mushroom pizza, which swaps out a traditional tomato sauce for a mushroom-puree base layered with fontina, spinach, and sundried tomatoes. Scuola vecchia means “old school,” and this Atlantic Avenue storefront is a bastion of authentic Neapolitan pizza. The wood-burning oven was sourced from Italy, as is the flour and the San Marzano tomatoes. The pizza at popular late-night hangout 123 Datura, a project of Nick Coniglio, Ned Grace, Rick Aurigemma, and Josh Acheatel, pulls inspiration from the pies at Acheatel and Aurigemma’s Manhattan haunt, 310 Bowery. Even in South Florida, it exceeds New York’s high pizza standards. Order the Grandma, a combo of tomato sauce, Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, olive oil, fresh basil, and mozzarella, baked to a crisp on a square sheet pan.
