Exhibition tours in Singapore: Explore the Singapore Biennale on bicycles

Riding on a bicycle across venues of the Singapore Biennale reminded us of a film lecturer at the New York University Tisch School of the Arts Asia, who shared that such movement is cinematic. Apart from thinking about what it means to have ownership of things with Jean-Paul Sartre, you can cover as much of the Singapore Biennale as possible on a bicycle before it ends on 26 February.

Rent bicycles at the Singapore Art Museum merchandise booth, pay a refundable deposit of $50, and you are ready to roll. Before you set off, be sure to grab a ‘Biennale on Wheels’ flyer so you know the route to go on, and the seven stops to make to see Biennale artworks.

Biennale on Wheels

The route covers the Singapore Art Museum, de Suantio Gallery at Singapore Management University, National Museum of Singapore, the Old National Library site, Peranakan Museum, and Asian Civilisations Museum. One exhibition of interest is Sakarin Krue-On’s ‘A Tiger Hunt’ at de Suantio Gallery, featuring a black-and-white film with intertitles that hark back to the silent films of the twenties.

We had our own go at ‘Biennale on Wheels’, and found riding next to the Singapore River a highlight of the route. Of particular intrigue to her was riding past a man standing next to his rickshaw on the way back to the Singapore Art Museum.

Some pedestrians are not used to a bicycle in the city area, so be sure to ring your bell out of courtesy. Please stay hydrated. When you return, drop off your wheels in their original condition at the bicycle rack to get your deposit back.

The Singapore Biennale, titled ‘An Atlas of Mirrors’, features works by over 60 artists across Southeast Asia, and East and South Asia. ‘Biennale on Wheels’ is available daily from 10 am to 6 pm. For more information, please visit the ‘Biennale on Wheels’ page.
