Fabricwood by Produce.Workshop Named World Interior of the Year at INSIDE World Festival of Interiors 2017

Fabricwood by Produce.Workshop has just put up an impressive installation for a premium designer furniture store in Singapore, on behalf of Herman Miller. Designed out of lightweight plywood, the Fabricwood measuring at 20m by 7m is stretched across the furniture store connecting from the 3m entrance to the 8m glass curtain at the end facing the adjacent cafĂŠ.

The mega structure features a series of small arcs that framed what it resembles ‘a baazar’ commented Produce.Workshop. They’ve made the simple tent canopies that can be pulled across the street to create “a makeshift marketplace, projecting a friendly and casual atmosphere.”

A traditional tailoring technique called “darting’ was used to shape the plywood,” according to Produce.Workshop, the idea was to create this repetitive loop “between computation and physical modelling served to calibrate the darts and their respective angles on a flat piece of plywood, which helped to determine its eventual curvature when closed.”

Which means the circular cut-outs in black are the converging points for the darts to allow the plywood to bend and avoid tears. Inspired by a clear understanding of Herman Miller’s products philosophy, culture and aspirations of the company, Produce.Workshop put together the design processes from their understanding of “work chairs”.

The final product was a combination of formal, structural and material innovation based on ergonomic research to create a surface that moulds comfortably to the human body. In addition, Produce.Workshop sought “to develop a ‘skin’ for the Herman Miller store that was ‘moulded’ to its host – Xtra.”

This project has clinched the title of “World Interior of the Year” at this year’s INSIDE World Festival of Interiors in its sixth year running, which took place in Berlin from Nov 15-17.

“A fresh approach to a project! It was about the process rather than the end product that led to a unique and new solution.” – The esteemed jury of INSIDE World Festival of Interiors 2017

The 2018 INSIDE will move to Amsterdam for its seventh edition.
