Sussanne Khan has an eye for aesthetics, that’s for sure. It’s evident from the interior designer’s design philosophy and her belief in the adage ‘less is more’. Therefore, her association with Zoya for their new collection Rhapsodie comes as no surprise. Rhapsodie, an artistic collection by Zoya from the House of Tata, is characterized by delicate fluid designs and rare stones. It finds inspiration in gourmet techniques like brushing, layering, scaling, pinch, and fold among others. Says Amanpreet Ahluwalia, Brand Head, ZOYA, “Rhapsodie introduces an interesting array of precious stones in fine jewelry, which are not usually seen in India. Meant for a modern, erudite woman who is a connoisseur of art, this collection is a tribute to her love, her passion, her fire, and her creativity.” The brand recently held an event in Mumbai to launch the collection, that saw Sussanne and Masterchef Sarah Todd come together for an evening of fun and creativity. The latter demonstrated various plating techniques that have inspired the collection. TMM got chatting with Sussanne about her role and her association with the jewelry collection.
How did the association with Zoya come about?
I am very intrigued and fascinated by a brand like Zoya because they are doing the whole wearable jewelry collection in a very special and different way. They are also extremely creative in making sure that the style and vibe of what they are creating are very special. The way they have let the stones be there as a whole, and not made facets to create the illusion of light is very interesting. They have carved out certain elements that have been inspired by architecture, the fluidity of food, and of nature. I like their forward-thinking approach and when I was approached, I was happy to be a part of it.
What’s special about Rhapsodie?
Rhapsodie is about creating a product that is almost organic in the movement to your body or form. Even the process of finding the correct stone is an art and then the designer has to ensure that the design emphasizes that stone. This collection is very interesting and different. It is extremely wearable and fabulously young!
What’s your personal jewelry statement?
I’m very much a ring and a bracelet person. I like a party happening on the hands! (laughs) I like lots of bracelets. I don’t like sporting earrings so much. I like jewelry for the neck but only if it’s something small. I don’t like wearing sets. I’m very much into watches as well. I think they are meaningful and can be passed on to generations. The whole focus and specialty of buying jewelry or any precious item is so you could pass it on to the future generations. It could be your daughter or niece or even your son’s girlfriend. It’s about how you cherish that piece to pass it on.
Have any such pieces been passed on to you?
Oh yes, lots has been passed on to me. That’s why I feel there is so much I keep that’s cherished and has to be passed on further. I think it’s a part of every Indian family. No matter how or big or small it might be, the jewelry that they save and keep for their kids is something that is treasured. No child, son or daughter should sell it off. It’s nice to let it be within your family.
Any styling tips for wearing jewelry?
I believe one should use one body part at a time. If you want to go heavy, go heavy on one part. Neck, ears, and hands together is too much. It’s just nice to be as simple as you can and focus on one thing. As you grow older, you realize that less is more and you learn to value to emphasize things in a different way.
