There was no better way for grandparents Richard and Jennifer Sands to bring their vision of a holiday home to life than by keeping the design (and much of the decor) all in the family. The couple enlisted the talents of their daughter Lyndsay Caleo Karol and son Bill Caleo, co-founders of The Brooklyn Home Company, to transform a blank slate in Delray Beach’s Seagate Residences into a livable interior for their growing clan of 19.
“Like most condos, the ceiling was flat and white,” says Karol. “I wanted to give the space a little breathing room.” The creative director’s first move? Raise the dropped ceiling in the living and dining rooms and add reclaimed beams. Karol also translated a need for storage into a library wall, which showcases keepsakes from the family’s travels and hides crafts and puzzles.
Her sculptor husband, Fitzhugh Karol, created many of the wooden elements throughout the home, including the living room’s distinctive fireplace. A woodworker himself, Richard pitched in by designing a one-of-a-kind dining table large enough to seat everyone, produced by Grand Wood near Canandaigua, New York. “Real living happens here,” Karol says. “With the white and wood backdrop, all the people and objects tell our story and give the space a lot of great energy and color.”
