A rendezvous between Rimowa and local fashion label Ong Shunmugam has resulted in the luggage maker’s debut fashion collaboration in Singapore. The exclusive six-piece capsule collection, titled Woman on a Mission, pays tribute to the adventurous spirit of Asian women, and hopes to inspire and encourage even more women to travel in style and embark on their own journey of exploration and self-discovery.
A striking melange of prints, this collection comprises six Rimowa Classic Flight Cabin Multiwheel 53 cases adorned with fabric sourced from six different Asian countries: China, Indonesia, India, Japan, Malaysia and Mongolia.
Ong Shunmugam reflects Singaporean founder and designer Priscilla Shunmugam’s mixed parentage in its use of Indian and Chinese prints and fabrics and reinterpretations of classic designs. Similarly, this collection for Rimowa uses traditional motifs in an entirely modern way. Fans of the label may recognize five of the fabrics from its existing collections; the India luggage, in a shimmery cyan floral brocade, is a highlight piece boasting traditional textile the label has not previously used.
The joyride continues inside, as each case is lined with fabric digitally printed with illustrations by Singapore-based visual artist Rizibë – a visual narrative of a female character’s adventures in each travel destination, from taking a relaxing bath in an onsen in Japan to a playful elephant ride in India.
Just three pieces are available per design, and the capsule collection became available from mid-October at Rimowa stores. Ong Shunmugam has also designed matching complementary travel-friendly apparel, sold separately at Atelier Ong Shunmugam Prices of the luggage and apparel are upon request.
