Is it possible to get on a seesaw and not smile? How about when that seesaw comes to life with brilliant light and sound?
This joyous combination is realized in Impulse, an interactive art installation making a stop on its world tour to downtown West Palm Beach February 15 to March 29. The serialist work has ignited people’s imaginations and illuminated urban areas since its inception in 2015. Originally designed to animate urban spaces during the frigid Montreal winter, the seesaws’ luminosity and tones are activated by movement, so users control the volume, tunes, and patterns emitted.
Lateral Office and CS Design developed the installation, which one of the creators, Lola Sheppard, described as “a giant urban instrument that’s constantly changing.” Hosted by the West Palm Beach Downtown Development Authority, the project will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., offering an amusing daily reprieve. At night, the chorus of 12 seesaws and their pulsating glow will be hypnotizing to watch. While strikingly beautiful, it will inspire wonderment in people of all ages and reflect the city’s moments of tranquility and action.
While exploring downtown West Palm, stop by the Development Authority’s Love Hour pop-up poetry stations every Wednesday and Friday through the end of February. Visitors can purchase handwritten love poems from West Palm Beach’s resident poets to celebrate the month of love. The stations will be situated outside of West Palm Beach staples like Subculture on February 14, the Impulse exhibit on February 21, and Fern Street Wine Bar & Kitchen on February 28, so pair the experience with a latte, light show, or romantic dinner.
