Tattoo Exhibition and Tattoo Day
“Perseverance: Japanese Tattoo Tradition in a Modern World” is an exhibition of the artistry of Japanese tattooing, which is still dismissed by mainstream Japanese culture yet often copied in the West with no regard to the rich history or symbolism of the Japanese tradition (opens February 26). Tattoo Day will feature a demonstration of Tebori (using a bamboo stick to tattoo by hand), a presentation by famed tattoo artists and the exhibition designer, a Q&A session, and tattoo-inspired activities for the whole family (February 27 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.).
Ikebana Flower Arranging
Students will be taught the basic principles and styles of the traditional Japanese art of ikebana—flower arrangement—from the perspective of either the contemporary Sogetsu School or the older, more conventional Ikenobo School. Each week, they will create fresh flower arrangements to take home and enjoy (assorted dates and times; advance registration required).
Sumi-e Ink Painting
Sumi-e, or “charcoal drawing,” is a form of Japanese ink painting brought from China in the 12th century. Students will learn to grind their own ink and utilize traditional brushstrokes in order to capture the beauty of either floral elements or sweeping landscapes (assorted dates and times; advance registration required).
Sado Tea Ceremony Class and Demonstration
Learn to perform a traditional Japanese tea ceremony in the authentic Seishin-an Tea House (February 14 and 21 during individual appointment times beginning at 10:15 a.m.; advance registration required) or simply observe “the way of tea”—sado—accompanied by a sip and a sweet (February 20 at 12, 1, 2, and 3 p.m.; seating is first-come, first-served).
Bonsai for Beginners
Bonsai—literally “tree in a tray”—is an ancient art form that creates the illusion of maturity in a tree, no matter its actual age. Students will learn or improve their skills in training and trimming their own tree (5-week session on February 14, 21, 28 and March 13 and 20 from 1-4 p.m. for beginners or 9 a.m.-12 p.m. for intermediate levels; advance registration required).
Paper Cut Art
Learn the intricate steps of creating three-dimensional paper cut artwork with the help of guest artist Hiromi Moneyhun (February 20 from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. or 2-4 p.m.; advance registration required).
Learn Japanese
Take the first step toward fluency in this intensive 2-day workshop by Japan-born educator Sumiko Uo, who has taught Japanese language, calligraphy, literature, and cinema at the university level (March 12 at 1 p.m., and March 13 throughout the day; advanced registration required).
