Opposite Kensington Gardens and two minutes from Buckingham Palace, The Milestone Hotel and Residences is hidden in plain sight. You might stumble across the hotel after a day’s shopping on High Street Kensington; despite being in the heart of the Royal Borough it feels like a wonderful secret nestled among the red-brick townhouses.
The 17th-century hotel has just completed a refurbishment of two suites, the Meghan Suite and 106 Grand Master Suite, with design direction by president and founder, Beatrice Tollman, and her daughter, Toni Tollman. Blending bespoke furnishings from master craftsmen and artisans, intriguing antiques and carefully chosen objets d’art, the result is exquisite.
The 106 Grand Master Suite has been nicknamed ‘the Hermès Suite’ as its white velvet walls are adorned with vintage scarves encased in glass. The rich, pine-forest green color scheme is complemented by tasteful Art Deco–inspired details, such as enormous gold and walnut wardrobes and statement lampshades. The large walnut desk overlooks the greenery of Kensington Palace gardens, where you may spot a member of the British Royal family flying over by helicopter. The suite has a charming balcony where we recommend taking breakfast in a plush robe and slippers.
The Meghan Suite, named after the newest member of the British Royal family, epitomizes the Duchess’s cool sophistication with an 18th-century ebonized French bureau plat, Giacometti-style chairs and original contemporary art. An expansive handmade Savoir bed sits on top of leopard-print carpet, and is surrounded by custom-designed Indian silks. The gorgeous bathroom, set behind bronzed mirrored double doors, is striking in monochrome marble.
