Your wardrobe isn’t the only thing that needs a little updating as the seasons change. Although not as dramatic as your “summer-to-fall-to-winter” outfit evolution, your home could definitely benefit by these five essentials to get you through the colder months. It’s important to mention that I believe that your home’s decor should be timeless, as well as season-less, however there are definitely a few ways to make it that much more welcoming for that time of year when you spend more time snuggled indoors without making dramatic changes to your design. And here’s how!
1. If you don’t have one already, invest in a large area rug.
Just like your favorite soft sweater that instantly makes you feel more relaxed and comforted, a textured rug underfoot will make your home a place you’ll find difficult to leave. I can’t stress enough of the importance of size: always opt for one that is large, where almost every piece of furniture is placed on top of it. Pottery Barn makes great area rugs and offers a wide selection, like this one seen below.

2. A great scented candle to inspire your senses.
I’ve done my research and unanimously, Diptyque’s “Feu de Bois” is myself and my friend’s favorite candle for fall and winter. Its scent instantly transports you to the natural luxuriousness of a country home with a wood burning fire.

3. A cast iron skillet or dutch oven is a winter culinary necessity.
Cold weather means eating hearty food like casserole and stews. For both taste and practicality, cast iron cookware makes one pot recipes easy to achieve with great results. I just purchased this Dutch Oven by Le Creuset that I cannot wait to try.

4. To create a warm an inviting atmosphere go for lamp that has a translucent shade.
I love task lighting for it’s no-nonsense functional look. But, for the best quality of light, opt for a fixture with some kind of translucent shade. There are a ton of options that aren’t just your conventional lamp with fabric shade such as this art nouveau inspired piece from West Elm.

5. Stock up on entertaining essentials (like wine!) to be ready for any impromptu guest.
Maybe it’s the cold weather, maybe it’s the holiday season coming up, but fall and winter is all about enjoying intimate moments with friends and family. Sometimes they are planned, and sometimes they happen off the cuff – like an after work wine and cheese date to rehash the long week. Nothing will impress more, or let great conversation flow, like having your home already stocked up on a velvety pinot or a crisp chardonnay. My go-to winter wine is Sterling Wine’s Cabernet Sauvignon.
