Part of a major private collection and unseen for the past 25 years, a 1964 Ferrari 275 GTB  Prototype is going up for auction. The 275 GTB is one of the most desirable Ferraris of a marque whose nearly every model is childhood poster material. With its beautiful Scaglietti coachwork and racing pedigree, the 275 GTB is a standout even in a garage full of Ferraris.

The Perfect “Bumblebee” to a Motor Collection

Today, the 275 GTB and its variants are among the most iconic, collectible, and valuable Ferraris, but the one up for auction on Gooding & Company is not a typical 275 GTB. With only approximately 250 made over its production run, this is the first 275 GTB ever built and the prototype test mule for the entire series. Featuring the traditional Ferrari chassis, 06003 is the very first example built and includes the updated long nose bodywork, independent rear suspension system, and rear-mounted transaxle.

The car entered the 35th annual Monte Carlo Rally in January 1966 and received extensive modifications for the race: a redesigned hood, rally lights, and “Giallo Prototipo (Prototype Yellow)” paint over black upholstery.

Driven by rally driver Giorgio Pianta and navigated by Roberto Lippi, the audience was treated to an incredible sight of a yellow 12-cylinder Ferrari berlinatta sporting the number 43. Pianta recalls his experience of driving the 06003 as “the most beautiful memory of [his] life”.

Restored almost exactly as it was for the 1966 Monte Carlo Rally, this one-of-a-kind 275 GTB is a landmark piece of Ferrari history. It retains its matching-numbers engine, stamped 06003, with various chalk marks and stampings throughout the steed that attest to its crowning status as the first of its kind built.

The car will go under the hammer for Scottsdale 2019. It will require some mechanical attention before use, but shall surely be a worthy possession for any collector of fine motors.
