Bombay Perfumery, on the idea of India-inspired fragrances
The Journey
Indian naturals have been used in perfumery for generations and I realized this while working for some of the biggest perfumery houses in Grasse. And then I decided to start my own label. The idea was to create a contemporary line of fragrances which would hero the beautiful Indian naturals.
Strategy Speech
The strategy is to offer a magical price range. To the best of my knowledge, nobody in the Indian market is operating at such price with so much of uniqueness in terms of product. A fragrance is an extremely personal choice, so we don’t expect to convert people overnight, but we are making efforts in building a brand that people might love to explore in the coming days because of our openness in terms of speaking out our process and ingredients that generally brands avoid.
India Insight
Here in India, people are willing to experiment and have enough disposable income in the age group of 22-45, probably that’s the reason year 2016 saw a major hike in the sales of fragrances, the majority of which was attributed to sales of luxury fragrances. The market is changing, all thanks to the growth of online shopping medium and availability of options to explore.
The Flavours
Chai Musk is actually the brainchild of our perfumer Alexandra Carlin, who loves everything Indian. Once, she was sipping masala chai at a Mumbai tapir, when the inspiration to build a fragrance capturing the essence of the chai struck her. She’s used the notes that go into chai- green tea, ginger, and lemongrass and balanced that beautifully with sandalwood for the milky accord. And, as we know, Jasmine is an integral part of any Indian festivity; I really wanted to build a fragrance that pays ode to the heady, sweet aroma of jasmine. That’s how Madurai Talkies came about- it’s a contemporary floral fragrance for women, which has jasmine as a heart note, beautifully balanced by white musk and cedarwood at the base.
USP Call
Think of tuberose with leather or patchouli with custard apple, and we can make it. I will say this is our USP. We use all high-quality naturals sourced from interesting and offbeat locations across the world to create an experience that is etched on your mind.
Social Media
In the present scenario, social media powerful tool to make or break your existence and that’s the reason we are very careful about what we share and how we share. We want to stand out from our peers in terms of our brand aesthetics and voice, so we consciously stay away from any hard selling tactics or over the top gimmicks to engage our audiences. We wish to engage with our consumers through different platforms, both digital and on the ground.
Dream Creation
In the west, the Indian Sandalwood is considered to be irreplaceable. And that thought has pushed me to think of crafting a fragrance around sandalwood that would highlight the beauty of this ingredient in an unexpected way.
