From the Ashes BBQ
From The Ashes BBQ was born when three chefs Frank Fellows, Martin Anderson and Curtis Bell, were left jobless from the COVID 19 pandemic and the long year of the UK being in lockdown. Together they agreed on starting a business selling BBQ and smoked meats sourcing their meats from farmers in the UK.
Location
Located in Hackney Wick, From The Ashes BBQ hatch is opened from Wednesday to Sunday, mid-day to 9 pm. Expect to find long queues on the weekends as it is very popular.
On the menu
The menu is short and simple, BBQ pork, beef meat-stuffed buns and doughnuts, sides like potatoes, slaw, beans, sauces and pickles. Specials are shown on a whiteboard, at the time of visiting, there was a cheeseburger, beef ribs, brisket, mac and cheese.
BBQ meats and doughnuts are not new to me, the first time I had meat doughnuts was at Dexter in Melborune. However, it is quite new in the UK.
Once you make it to the front of the queue, you give your order at the till and collect a paper ticket. There’s no seating at the location, a few benches nearby but I suggest heading towards Queen Elizabeth Park to enjoy your food.
The food
Served up in a takeaway box, the pillowy soft doughnut is covered in a dusting of granulated white sugar. You can tell it is freshly made in-house, plenty of pork shoulder meat is stuffed inside with dustings of pork crackling pieces, smeared on one half of the doughnut is the chilli jam.
