A pair of Mahatma Gandhi’s gold-plated glasses have sold at auction for $340,000 (£260,000) after they were found sticking halfway out of a Bristol, UK’s auction house letterbox.
The spectacles were acquired by phone bid from a US collector after a frantic6 minutes of bidding.
East Bristol Auctions auctioneer, Andrew Stowe said the glasses were expected to sell for £15,000.
They had been handed down through the generations of the owner’s family, after an ancestor had met Gandhi in South Africa in the 1920s.
Gandhi had been known to give his old pairs of glasses to those who had helped him.
