Get a Slice of the Action at These 6 Pizzerias in Hong Kong

When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie. That’s amore.

Dean Martin had it right. Pizza is indeed amore. And it would seem the rest of Hong Kong agrees with me, what with the demand for a hot slice and new pizzerias popping up all over the city trying to fulfil that. Whether it’s a thin or thick crust you fancy, a classic or fun and funky topping, Hong Kong has it all. So with a need to whittle it down, here it is, our list of the top six pizza places in Hong Kong to get the best dough.

208 Duecento Otto

Although this restaurant is not just a pizzeria, serving up rustic Italian dishes too, the pizza menu has been a Hong Kong favourite for some time now. The thin base and light, crunchy crust is a winning foundation for their Neapolitan style toppings. A must-try is their Margherita. Seemingly simple, the pizza bursts with natural flavour from the all-time pizza combination: tomato, buffalo mozzarella and fresh basil.

Alvy's

A cozy spot in Kennedy Town, Alvy’s is an American style pizzeria which has all the comforts of a casual neighbourhood bar in New York, but with some creative locally-inspired pizzas to entice the discerning foodies of Hong Kong. For instance, the Bak Gwei — meaning white ghost in Cantonese — is actually a white base pizza made with gruyere béchamel and mozzarella before it’s topped with char siu (or Chinese barbecue pork) and geung yeong (a traditional ginger and spring onion paste). Non adventurists need not worry as they also come through with the classics too.

Dough Bros

Just off of the Happy Valley Racecourse is the small take-away pizza shop Dough Bros. And yes, we know that it’s not a sit down restaurant but when it comes to good pizza, it’ll be worth your time. Plus they are readily available on the delivery apps too. The sourdough base for the pizza is the key here, as well as the garlic and herb dip it comes with. What’s more, their freshly-filled doughnuts (custard is a personal favourite) with a cold craft beer is super naughty, but incredibly nice.

Emmer Pizzeria & Café

Referring to the ancient grain they use in their pizza, Emmer is the pizzeria taking over the space that Petite Café in Pacific Place used to be. The interior is just as airy and has retained the relaxed but classy vibe of its predecessor. The pizza toppings here are mostly classic; think Margherita, mushroom and four cheeses to name a couple. But it’s the dough that makes a world of difference. The organic heritage grain is blended with rye and Italian flour before it is fermented for two days and then baked as a pizza in their rotating steel oven. The result is a naturally tasty, light yet well-seasoned pizza that (if you’re a bread lover) you’ll probably eat all the crusts of.

Motorino

A pizza concept that followed Chef Mathieu Palombino from Brooklyn in New York to Hong Kong, and now beyond, Motorino is the crowd-pleasing Neapolitan pizzeria. Rustic décor, casual vibes, fun music, and of course excellent pizzas. The wood fire oven here creates a beautifully blistered crust while retaining its soft and fluffy centre. There are some great pizzas that range from the classics to the creative, including toppings such as Brussels Sprouts and the savoury Italian Colatura di alici.

The Pizza Project

Another new restaurant opening by the Pirata group, The Pizza Project follows a similar path as sister pasta restaurant Pici and offers heartwarming food made from high quality Italian ingredients in a laid-back environment. Simple but extremely effective. Featuring a concise one page menu, the non-reservations restaurant offers antipasti, pizza and dessert with a wine and cocktail list too. Start with the Mozzarella Fritta which comes with a vibrant pesto sauce, before diving into a Nduja pizza to kick it up a notch. It’s topped with spicy sausage, smoked scarmorza, tomato sauce and fior di latte for a fiery slice. There are also vegetarian selections on the menu, while gluten free dishes are promised to come in March.
