Good old Eastenders Pie ‘n’ Mash

Eastenders Pie ‘n’ Mash

Good old Eastenders Pie ‘n’ mash. Yes, as a born and bred East Londoner I love getting some tasty pie and mash that cost dirt cheap. Another edition to the cheap eats section, something filling for under £5. Pie and mash originated in London back in the Victorian Era, for the working class.

Traditional pie and mash shops are usually run by family generations, you can catch a glimpse of the machines churning the potatoes out and someone by the oven bringing out the hot fresh pies in moulds.

The Interior of two-seater tables and plastic chairs surround the shop. Bottles of chilli vinegar, salt and pepper pots on the tables. The menu on the wall is simple, a selection of beef meat pies or a veggie version, Quorn pies, eels and mash.

1 pie, mash and liquor only cost £3.30. It has a suet pastry crust, rough on the top, best drenched in liquor sauce and lashings of chilli vinegar. No, not the alcoholic type, it’s a sauce that looks floury with parsley and stock. Mash is silky smooth without any lumps. Going for the classic beef mince, cutting into the pie. A rich brown gravy filled with British mince from John Langton in Smithfields market. The filling flows out the pie onto the white plate.

The mash uses Maris Piper potatoes, creating that fluffy texture. Eastenders Pie ‘n’ Mash does beautiful pie fillings. Smoothest mash, locals and OAP’s are found inside enjoying their cheap and cheerful meal.
