After the Hender Scheme x Tod’s collaboration was teased late last month, we finally get a full look at the innovative collection. Tod’s introduces this as part of the fourth chapter of the Tod’s Factory project, the creative laboratory in which established and emerging creatives offer their perspective to Tod’s DNA. With a focus on a “New Craft” method, the collab seamlessly merges Hender Scheme’s contemporary approach to craftsmanship with Tod’s luxury aesthetic. The Japanese label was founded in 2010 by Ryo Kashiwazaki and quickly blew up within the menswear scene for its artisanal, all-leather homages to classic sneaker silhouettes.
Kashiwazaki worked closely with Tod’s creative director Walter Chiapponi to create a capsule of shoes, bags, and apparel that combines the Italian brand’s flair for luxury with Hender Scheme’s penchant for handcrafted irreverence. To truly execute this project as faithfully as possible to both brands, Tod’s and Hender Scheme artisans worked together to share samples and prototypes, forming strong bonds along the way.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a Hender Scheme collab without Kashiwazaki’s eye for creative reinterpretation. Take the tassel loafers for example. He flips the script on Tod’s logo and interprets it as “DOT’s,” which he then reworks into the loafer’s soles. “Flip is my creative slogan, so the idea was to flip the Tod’s logo. DOT’s is the result,” he says. “At the same time, I focused on the dots of the Gommino [loafers] sole, which I see as pebbles. So, I interpreted the Gommino pebbles as DOT’S.”
Since Tod’s and Hender Scheme both focus on shoes and leather, Kashiwazaki decided to combine their respective specialties by looking at the commonalities and differences of each brand — exactly how a collaboration should be approached in our opinion.
