The Chopard Red Carpet Collection might appear to be a high jewellery fixture at the Cannes Film Festival today but it was never a formal “jeweller of the festival” relationship until 2007 when Chopard celebrated the 60th anniversary of the festival with the inaugrual collection of highly bespoke fine jewelcrafts we enjoy today. From the fertile imagination of Chopard Co-President and Creative Director, Caroline Scheufele, herself, each year, the Red Carpet Collection for Cannes cleverly blends ancestral skills and cutting-edge techniques, showcasing the various talents exercised within the House.
Chopard’s Red Carpet Collection for Cannes Film Festival 2019
Since 1998, the annual tribute to artistic, cinematic excellence became not only a cultural phenomenon but one of glamorous, bejewelled star power. The 21-year-long relationship between the maison and Cannes has also produced the legendary Palme d’or award year after year, traditionally presented at the festival’s closing ceremonies. Each year, Caroline Scheufele designs an Haute Joaillerie collection that meets the extraordinary challenge of offering a number of jewellery creations matching the number of Festival editions.
This 72nd edition of the Cannes Film Festival year is no different. Inspired by love, Scheufele, works with her atelier’s amazing artisans to birth an exceptional collection featuring jewellery and watch pieces which will be modelled by actresses during their red-carpet appearances.
With her jewellery creations, she transforms and reinvents them in her own terms. LOVE, the theme of this Red Carpet Collection, celebrates love in its most diverse forms. Requiring no less than 14 weeks in the making, a jewellery set composed of a necklace, a ring and a pair of earrings within which splendid heart-cut tanzanites, Paraiba tourmalines, amethysts and diamonds meet and mingle inside light and airy circles made of white gold and titanium. The radiant heart cut as well as the dazzling coloured stones joins the hallmarks of a collection exploring the many facets of LOVE.
Orchids seem like it’s taking the spotlight in this collection. Offering vibrant pink sapphires and diamonds, the collection features earrings that are entirely paved with diamonds and amethysts – vividly expressing the creative and technical brilliance cultivated by the Maison.
Mother of Pearl
Gracing the wrists of actresses will be Chopard’s delicate cuff watch. The finely wrought bracelet set featuring 60 carats of diamonds forming a sculptural lacework pattern. The watch dial – itself set with eight marquise-cut diamonds arranged like a windrose against a mother-of-pearl backdrop – is framed by two precious coloured stones. On one version, these are two 3-carat Mozambique rubies; while the second bears two beautiful 4.2-carat fancy light yellow diamonds.
In The Age of Sustainability
Addressing ethics and social responsibility, Chopard embarked on a major challenge by enriching the Red Carpet Collection with two pieces from a capsule collection made from certified and ethical materials purchased from Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) in 2013. The brand became the first major luxury jewellery brand to pledge sustainably sourced precious materials.
Commensurate with the ethical criteria of the Green Carpet Collection, the collection this year features some exceptional new pieces, starting with a superb cuff bracelet featuring volutes composed of more than 25 carats of diamonds and which required no less than 340 hours of work and a necklace and a pair of matching earrings also join the line-up. Featuring white gold and diamonds forming fine jewellery lacework, their design is reminiscent of Chopard’s classic Haute Joaillerie pieces.
At Cannes 2018, actress Julianne Moore wore a fantastic necklace from the Green Carpet collection. The Cannes Film Festival will commence on May 14th 2019 and last through 12-day of screenings.
