Hikari Sushi Bar 光 Queenstown review
Queenstown is full of wonderful food, spoilt for choices and world cuisines. After our day out in Arrowtown, it was time for dinner.
We had our eye on Hikari Sushi bar 光 throughout the trip, from the outside the long open windows see into the restaurant with a gigantic fish artwork placed on the back wall, and Japanese décor filled inside. Asahi beer board and signage on the outside. The word Hikari 光 means light in Japanese.
They opened their first branch in Queenstown, expanding to six other outlets throughout New Zealand. It has a lot of character filled with Japanese décor, plants and culture.
Menu
This branch of Hikari focuses on sushi, tapas. Tempura, bento box, teriyaki & katsu, donburi bowl, curry, ramen, udon, hot pot and sides.
The price point is great value compared to Sushi restaurants in London. Platters $29 converts to £14.
The food
I am obsessed with soft shell crab and tend to gravitate to any dishes with them. From the tapas section, you find soft shell crab baos $15.90. Mini charcoal coloured pillowy buns stuffed with crispy deep-fried soft shell crab, tobiko, sliced avocados, microgreens, layered with wasabi mayo.
The HIKARI platter was a no brainer $29.00, it’s a mystery with what you get as everything is prepared by chef’s choice. However, I was lucky to receive a great selection of fresh sashimi, rainbow roll, and nigiri pieces.
The service is fast, efficient, and friendly, food is prepared quickly. Defiantly somewhere to consider whilst in Queenstown.
The low down
Opened in 2007, with six other locations in New Zealand.
Price: $$
